Een watervlugge afwisseling van literaire generaties en hun tijdschriften, modes en stromingen, dat is de geschiedenis van de literatuur in Nederland en Vlaanderen tussen 1900 en 1945. Die ruime visie bestrijkt verder bijvoorbeeld het verschijnsel moderniteit, hoge én lage literatuur, jazz, literaire journalistiek, film, radio, maar ook de populariteit van vrouwelijke auteurs en koloniale romans. Er staat in 'Bloed en rozen' geen hek om de Nederlandse letteren. Literatoren in Noord en Zuid lieten zich inspireren door vakgenoten uit het buitenland en ook die 'literaire internationale' hoort bij de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse literatuur.

In 1594, the first Dutch ships sailed to ‘the East’. Throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth century, almost five thousand ships were sent to the Dutch East Indies, attracting a growing number of travellers, with trade as one of the major incentives. In addition to Dutch missionary ambitions, progress and technological innovations not only fed the growing hunger for expansion, but also stirred an appetite for adventure. The hope for a life in welfare is mirrored in the growing numbers of passengers travelling ‘East’ in the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century. At the same time, Javanese travellers started to explore their homeland as well. Travelling the Dutch East Indies not only offers a diverse picture of travel and a critical perspective on the colonial ideology with which it is associated, but also shows how the collections of Leiden University Libraries can serve as a rich source for all kinds of historical research.

Minorities and Conflict are prevailing topics in literature and translation. De criticus, journalist en schrijver Dr. P.H. Ritter Jr. (1882-1962) groeide in het interbellum uit tot een nationale bekendheid, een fenomeen. Hij publiceerde het ene boek na het andere, sprak iedere zondag voor de AVRO over literatuur, recenseerde wekelijks boeken voor het Utrechtsch Dagblad en reisde het hele land door om colleges en lezingen te geven.
