MR GRAHAM DIED TODAY. The gangrene that set in when we cut off his leg was too much for the few meds we had. He was the first of our group to go. Misha’s nearly nineteen; she should be thinking about dating and holding down a job. Maybe college, if her folks can swing it. The White Seed Brings Life to Worlds Three thousand years ago, the seeds arrived from Earth on hundreds of worlds. The developed worlds formed the Network, connected only by radio and laser. Since the time of the seeds, nothing but information has traveled between the stars. Now a starship, The Child of Ambition, is changing that. Her first mission: to explore the dark worlds, the ones that failed. Kali Hakoian, pilot-astronaut and war hero, thought landing on the super-Earth of Keto would be routine. The emptiest seed world—its global ocean matted with algae and crawling with hurricanes—hides the oldest human ruins. Her crew of scientists: a dreamer, a believer, and a retired assassin. Their hypothesis—self-termination of the seed base. But when an act of sabotage strands her in the path of a superstorm, she’s forced to escape with the man she trusts the least. They may never find out what happened to the settlers—unless it happens to them. Can she trust her crew enough to find a way out of the darkness?

'I planted a dog rose. Then I found a curious piece of driftwood and used this, and one of the necklaces of holey stones on the wall, to stake the rose. The garden had begun. I saw it as a therapy and a pharmacopoeia.' In 1986 artist and filmmaker, Derek Jarman, bought Prospect Cottage, a Victorian fisherman's hut on the desert sands of Dungeness. It was to be a home and refuge for Jarman throughout his HIV diagnosis, and it would provide the stage for one of his most enduring, if transitory projects - his garden. Conceived of as a 'pharmacopoeia' - an ever-evolving circle of stones, plants and flotsam sculptures all built and grown in spite of the bracing winds and arid shingle - it remains today a site of fascination and wonder. Pharmacopoeia brings together the best of Derek Jarman's writing on nature, gardening and Prospect Cottage. Told through journal entries, poems and fragments of prose, it paints a portrait of Jarman's personal and artistic reliance on the space Dungeness offered him, and shows the cycle of the years spent there in one moving collage. '[Derek] made of this wee house, his wooden tent pitched in the wilderness, an artwork - and out of its shingle skirts, an ingenious garden - now internationally recognised. But, first and foremost, the cottage was always a living thing, a practical toolbox for his work' Tilda Swinton, from her Foreword

Today, Peru is recognized as one of the top food destinations on the planet. But twenty-five years ago, the world’s foodies focused their attention elsewhere—except for wine merchant–turned–archaeologist and art historian Robert Bradley. This delightful book is the product of twenty-five years of exquisite digressions from what Bradley might call his “real job”—the culmination of decades of his personal discoveries about the food of Peru and the history that led to its current culinary florescence. Journeying from coasts to highlands and back again, the intrepid author introduces us to the most interesting aspects of Peruvian cuisine that he encounters along the way, with several recipes included. Bradley sizzles about Peruvian ceviche, pisco and the pisco sour, and the country’s best restaurants—two ranked in the top ten by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2023. He does this all while sampling food lore, Andean anthropology, history, linguistics, and the pleasures and perils of travel within Peru. For the armchair tourist or the seasoned traveler, the gourmet and the gourmand, and the merely curious, Eating Peru offers a welcome break from everyday fare.

Australian Dry Zone Acacias For Human Food written by APN House and has been published by CSIRO PUBLISHING this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992-01-01 with Science categories.

Australia's unique and diverse woody flora has become socially, economically and environmentally important in many other countries. The seed of some Acacia species showing promise in planting programs in semi-arid areas has been a part of the traditional diet of Australia's Aboriginal people. The dry seed may be ground to flour, mixed with water and eaten as a paste or baked to form a cake. Forest tree breeding has focussed on wood production, selecting taller, faster-growing varieties. The same principles of selection and improvement can be applied to improve seed yields and nutritional properties of shrubs. The selection criteria would include seed characters such as taste, seed coat thickness and nutritive value to maximize their food value. The book looks at the possibility of building upon the traditional knowledge of Aboriginal Australians, using modern scientific methods, for the benefit of people in the world's dry areas. Australian Dry-zone Acacias for Human Food documents the proceedings of a workshop held at Glen Helen, Northern Territory, Australia. The purpose of the meeting was to examine the idea of developing the food value of the seed of Australia's dry-zone acacias. This book covers a summary of the workshop conlcusions, the invited papers, and recommendations of the working groups.
