The democratization of a national government is only a first step in diffusing democracy throughout a country's territory. Even after a national government is democratized, subnational authoritarian 'enclaves' often continue to deny rights to citizens of local jurisdictions. Gibson offers new theoretical perspectives for the study of democratization in his exploration of this phenomenon. His theory of 'boundary control' captures the conflict pattern between incumbents and oppositions when a national democratic government exists alongside authoritarian provinces (or 'states'). He also reveals how federalism and the territorial organization of countries shape how subnational authoritarian regimes are built and how they unravel. Through a novel comparison of the late nineteenth-century American 'Solid South' with contemporary experiences in Argentina and Mexico, Gibson reveals that the mechanisms of boundary control are reproduced across countries and historical periods. As long as subnational authoritarian governments coexist with national democratic governments, boundary control will be at play.

The democratization of the national government is only a first step in the diffusion of democracy throughout a country's territory. Even after a national government is democratized, subnational authoritarian "enclaves" often continue to deny rights to citizens of local jurisdictions. This is a common but little-understood problem in the post-communist and developing world and was a key facet of American politics until the fall of the "Solid South" in the mid-twentieth century. This book explains how subnational authoritarianism is part of normal democratic politics and strategic interactions between local authoritarians and national democratic leaders.

Boundary Control Of Quasi Linear Hyperbolic Initial Boundary Value Problem written by Jonathan de Halleux and has been published by Presses univ. de Louvain this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Science categories.
The thesis presents different control design approaches for stabilizing networks of quasi-linear hyperbolic partial differential equations. These equations are usually conservative, which gives them interesting properties to design stabilizing control laws. Two main design approaches are developed: a methodology based on entropies and Lyapunov functions and a methodology based on the Riemann invariants. The stability theorems are illustrated using numerical simulations. Two practical applications of these methodologies are presented. Network of navigation channels are modelled using the Saint-Venant equation (also known as the Shallow Water Equations). The stabilization problem of such system has an industrial importance in order to satisfy the navigation constraints and to optimize the production of electricity in hydroelectric plants, usually located at each hydraulic gate. A second application deals with the regulation of water waves in moving tanks. This problem is also modelled by a modified version of the shallow water equations and appears in a number industrial fields which deal with liquid moving parts.

Dynamics and Control of Mechanical Systems in Offshore Engineering is a comprehensive treatment of marine mechanical systems (MMS) involved in processes of great importance such as oil drilling and mineral recovery. Ranging from nonlinear dynamic modeling and stability analysis of flexible riser systems, through advanced control design for an installation system with a single rigid payload attached by thrusters, to robust adaptive control for mooring systems, it is an authoritative reference on the dynamics and control of MMS. Readers will gain not only a complete picture of MMS at the system level, but also a better understanding of the technical considerations involved and solutions to problems that commonly arise from dealing with them. The text provides: · a complete framework of dynamical analysis and control design for marine mechanical systems; · new results on the dynamical analysis of riser, mooring and installation systems together with a general modeling method for a class of MMS; · a general method and strategy for realizing the control objectives of marine systems with guaranteed stability the effectiveness of which is illustrated by extensive numerical simulation; and · approximation-based control schemes using neural networks for installation of subsea structures with attached thrusters in the presence of time-varying environmental disturbances and parametric uncertainties. Most of the results presented are analytical with repeatable design algorithms with proven closed-loop stability and performance analysis of the proposed controllers is rigorous and detailed. Dynamics and Control of Mechanical Systems in Offshore Engineering is primarily intended for researchers and engineers in the system and control community, but graduate students studying control and marine engineering will also find it a useful resource as will practitioners working on the design, running or maintenance of offshore platforms.

Control Methods In Pde Dynamical Systems written by Fabio Ancona and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Mathematics categories.
While rooted in controlled PDE systems, this 2005 AMS-IMS-SIAM Summer Research Conference sought to reach out to a rather distinct, yet scientifically related, research community in mathematics interested in PDE-based dynamical systems. Indeed, this community is also involved in the study of dynamical properties and asymptotic long-time behavior (in particular, stability) of PDE-mixed problems. It was the editors' conviction that the time had become ripe and the circumstances propitious for these two mathematical communities--that of PDE control and optimization theorists and that of dynamical specialists--to come together in order to share recent advances and breakthroughs in their respective disciplines. This conviction was further buttressed by recent discoveries that certain energy methods, initially devised for control-theoretic a-priori estimates, once combined with dynamical systems techniques, yield wholly new asymptotic results on well-established, nonlinear PDE systems, particularly hyperb These expectations are now particularly well reflected in the contributions to this volume, which involve nonlinear parabolic, as well as hyperbolic, equations and their attractors; aero-elasticity, elastic systems; Euler-Korteweg models; thin-film equations; Schrodinger equations; beam equations; etc. in addition, the static topics of Helmholtz and Morrey potentials are also prominently featured. A special component of the present volume focuses on hyperbolic conservation laws, to take advantage of recent theoretical advances with significant implications also on applied problems. in all these areas, the reader will find state-of-the-art accounts as stimulating starting points for further research.

In the development of optimal control, the complexity of the systems to which it is applied has increased significantly, becoming an issue in scientific computing. In order to carry out model-reduction on these systems, the authors of this work have developed a method based on asymptotic analysis. Moving from abstract explanations to examples and applications with a focus on structural network problems, they aim at combining techniques of homogenization and approximation. Optimal Control Problems for Partial Differential Equations on Reticulated Domains is an excellent reference tool for graduate students, researchers, and practitioners in mathematics and areas of engineering involving reticulated domains.
