Linguistic theory since the Cognitive Revolution has fol- lowed one of the premises of that revolution by largely sidelining the issue of emotions and concentrating on those aspects of language that are more strictly cognitive. However, during the last ten years research in cognitive science, especially in neuropsychology, has begun to fill in the gaps left by the exclusion of emotions from cognitive research. The work of those like Oatley, Zajonc, Damasio, and LeDoux, to name a few, has demonstrated both that it is possible to construct models of how emotions play into the workings of the psyche and that they are necessary in giving us a balanced view of the human mind. Language, Feeling, and the Brain attempts to apply the fruits of this new research in emotion to our understanding of language itself. Building on Karl Pribram's integrated model of emotions and motivations, the book takes an eclectic approach to explaining how emotions contribute to the nature of language, drawing on research done in neuropsychology, philosophy, cognitive linguistics, anthropology, and related fields. Its aim is to construct a propositional model for how the emotions may have contributed to the emergence of symbolic formation, most especially in the forms of gesture and speech, and how identifying that emotional influence sheds new light on everything we have had to say about language itself, from lexis and grammar to culture and literature.

Words are not just labels for conceptual categories. Words construct conceptual categories, frame situations and influence behavior. Where do they get their meaning? This book describes how words acquire their meaning. The author argues that mechanisms based on associations, pattern detection, and feature matching processes explain how words acquire their meaning from experience and from language alike. Such mechanisms are summarized by the distributional hypothesis, a computational theory of meaning originally applied to word occurrences only, and hereby extended to extra-linguistic contexts. By arguing in favor of the cognitive foundations of the distributional hypothesis, which suggests that words that appear in similar contexts have similar meaning, this book offers a theoretical account for word meaning construction and extension in first and second language that bridges empirical findings from cognitive and computer sciences. Plain language and illustrations accompany the text, making this book accessible to a multidisciplinary academic audience.

Metaphor has been studied as a linguistic, conceptual, and communicative phenomenon in a wide range of disciplines, including linguistics, literary studies, philosophy, education, political science, media studies, communication science, psychology, and neurosciences. While the Cognitive Theory of Metaphor has dominated the field since the “cognitive turn” in the 1980s, alternatives have been proposed, including the Neural Theory of Metaphor, the Relevance Theory Approach, the Complex Systems Approach, and the Dynamic Systems Approach. Though studies are still often text-based, there is a growing body of research on visual metaphor, multimodal metaphor, and gestural metaphor, as well as experimental research ranging from studies on metaphor processing and comprehension to studies in NLP and machine learning. Metaphor Studies is thus a highly interdisciplinary field that encompasses a myriad of theories, approaches, and methods. In current metaphor research, each of these strands is facing new challenges and offering new venues of cutting-edge research using state-of-the-art technologies. Researchers tend to focus on their own research areas and provide in-depth views within the scope of their own disciplines. Metaphor Studies do not seem to escape this phenomenon, in spite of the large number of disciplines they draw on, ranging from linguistics to psychology to the theory of science. Hence, there seem to be little cooperation and communication across different fields, methods, and approaches, having metaphors and figurative language as their main object of investigation.
