The many technology-related educational changes of the past decade have been propelled by even greater changes in the general consumer technology landscape. Education has become increasingly entwined with the digital consumer landscape. We are no longer asking whether digital materials and tools should be integrated into teaching and learning, but how and how well. Meanwhile, the overall academic performance of U.S. students has not kept pace with our international peers. Many policymakers have called for increased attention to students' 21st century skills and work readiness, pointing to the critical role technology should play in educational innovation. These changes mean that many mainstream accessible technologies can be used in the classroom to benefit a diverse population of learners, including students with disabilities and English language learners, reflecting the national shift from separate special education programs to more inclusive classrooms. Changes to policies and standards have pushed assistive and accessible technologies to the forefront, including the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008, which requires teacher preparation programs to address educational technology and principles of universal design for learning (UDL), and the National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard (NIMAS), which creates a public-private infrastructure to provide more timely delivery of digital text to students with physical and print disabilities. This volume represents pioneering ideas that examine how accessible educational technologies can be harnessed for breakthrough learning for all students. Chapters will cover innovation trends in educational and assistive technologies, cognitive and neuroscience findings on how individual differences impact technology use and choice; the intersection of educational, leisure, health habits and exer-gaming; the use of social networking tools by students with and without disabilities; the use of social networking for teacher professional learning communities; the future of assessments for decision-making; and an analysis of the habits of mind and work traits of innovators NCTI has interviewed over the past five years.

Bridge the achievement gap with proven strategies for student success Breakthrough Principals debunks the myth of the 'superhero' principal by detailing the common actions and practices of leaders at our nation's fastest-gaining public schools. Based on the authors' Transformational Leadership Framework, which they developed through in-depth study of more than 100 high-gaining, high-poverty schools, the book distills findings into a practical, action-focused plan for diagnosing school needs and implementing structures, systems and practices that accelerate student achievement. Brought to life by case studies of principals who have led dramatic gains in student achievement, the book is a how-to guide for increasing the quality of teaching and learning; improving school culture; attracting and supporting high-performing teachers; and involving parents and community to help students achieve. You'll learn how breakthrough principals make the school's mission a real part of both strategy and practice, and set up sustainable systems that support consistent, ongoing improvement. High-impact practices are organized into five broad categories: learning and teaching, school-wide culture, aligned staff, operations and systems, and personal leadership. The primary job of school leadership is to help students succeed. It begins with first recognizing and prioritizing areas of need, then finding and implementing the most effective solutions. Whether you work in a turn around environment, or want to make a good school better, this book will give you a set of concrete practices—illustrated through examples of real principals in real schools—that have been proven to work. Discover the primary drivers of student achievement Work toward the school's vision in staffing, operations, and systems Set the tone for all relationships and practices with good leadership Closing the achievement gap is a major goal of educational leadership, and principals are forever searching for viable methods that help them better serve their students. Breakthrough Principals unveils the details behind the success stories from across the nation to provide a roadmap to transformative gains.

Using the methods described in Breakthrough Learning, you should be able to learn and successfully apply what you learn at least 20 times faster and with 1/21 or less time, effort, and resources than others use, even while following what they consider to be the most effective learning and application methods. There's also a second meaning of breakthrough learning: Make breakthroughs, which are ways of being vastly more effective in applying your own and others' time, money, effort, and other resources to accomplish something important. One possible way to do so is by learning and effectively applying some of the breakthrough processes developed by The 400 Year Project. These processes include 2,000 percent solutions (ways of accomplishing 20 times more results with the same or less time, money, and effort), complementary 2,000 percent solutions (2,000 percent solutions whose improvements multiply the effectiveness of other 2,000 percent solutions by the same degree), and excellent solutions (making one set of changes that have an impact equal to 10 complementary 2,000 percent solutions). The book 2,000 Percent Living also discusses how to make improvements by using 2,000 percent solutions, as well as with complementary 2,000 percent solutions. In Breakthrough Learning, you'll study different learning methods that will multiply the effectiveness for making breakthroughs of what is contained in 2,000 Percent Living by at least another 20 times. What are the key ideas in Breakthrough Learning? A good Broadway musical begins with an overture that gives an entertaining sense of the show. The opening scene grabs our attention and makes us interested in the characters and in finding out what will happen to them. Let me now try to do something similar in delivering this book's key ideas. The setting is of our world being flooded with new information at an astonishing rate, one that is so rapid that many people describe necessary learning as trying to drink out of a fire hose. Since we cannot begin to deal with all the new information and knowledge that is available, how can we make better use of relevant portions? In this regard, I have a burning desire: I want you to fulfill more of your God-given potential while applying the spiritual gifts and abilities that He has given you. I hope you will feel more of His heart for doing so as you read this book. Here is a preview. We start in Part One: Breakthrough Learning Fundamentals by considering six fundamentals of breakthrough learning, fundamentals that are too often ignored. There is perhaps no more valuable skill for gaining personal benefits and serving others than becoming adept at learning new disciplines on one's own. In Part Two: Teach Yourself, we focus on the most important aspects of this form of learning. The material is divided into nine lessons that describe how to be highly effective in self-directed learning. In Part Three: Teach Others, we look at instructing others so they quickly become highly effective breakthrough learners.
