"Brutalities is electric with insight, riveted by its commitments—to love and bewilderment, to bearing witness—and utterly propulsive." —Leslie Jamison, author of The Empathy Exams A searing, vivid memoir that investigates the dynamics of violence, power, desire, and a body pushed to the brink. Quarantined in a southwestern desert city in the midst of her high-risk pregnancy, Margo Steines felt her life narrow around her growing body, compelling her to reckon with the violence entangled in its history. She was a professional dominatrix in New York City, a homestead farmer in a brutal relationship, a welder on a high-rise building crew, and a mixed martial arts enthusiast; each of her many lives brought a new perspective on how power and masculinity coalesce—and how far she could push her body toward the brink. With unflinching candor, Steines searches for the roots of her erstwhile attraction to pain while charting the complicated triumph of gentleness and love.

To come into the life of John and Catherine, one has to enter the misty mountains of Tennessee. The setting is the Cumberland Mountains above Huntland. The story of a brutal marriage of poverty, love, sorrow and sacrifice. Catherine is the young redheaded valley girl, John Watson, a moonshiner, brought to his beloved Tally Top. She in turn brought six children into the world for him, some in his whiskey cave. She wasn't your traditional mountain girl. She carried water, lots of water, to make whisky. Her babies were taught quietness, and love, never fighting. She taught them to read, do numbers, and watch the eagles soar over the canyon. Then, disaster, John was caught moonshining. She stayed on his mountain, dug and sold ginseng, berries, and nuts to exist. She ate bullfrogs and rabbits. Then John came home, but her brutal life continued. She did what she could to survive and she never complained. A book of love in Appalachia.

Orange Prize–winner Karen Connelly’s compelling memoir about her journey to Burma, where she fell in love with a leader of the Burmese rebel army. When Karen Connelly goes to Burma in 1996 to gather information for a series of articles, she discovers a place of unexpected beauty and generosity. She also encounters a country ruled by a brutal military dictatorship that imposes a code of censorship and terror. Carefully seeking out the regime’s critics, she witnesses mass demonstrations, attends protests, interviews detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and flees from police. When it gets too risky for her to stay, Connelly flies back to Thailand, but she cannot leave Burma behind. Connelly’s interest in the political turns more personal on the Thai-Burmese border, where she falls in love with Maung, the handsome and charismatic leader of one of Burma’s many resistance groups. After visiting Maung’s military camp in the jungle, she faces an agonizing decision: Maung wants to marry Connelly and have a family with her, but if she marries this man she also weds his world and his lifelong cause. Struggling to weigh the idealism of her convictions against the harsh realities of life on the border, Connelly transports the reader into a world as dangerous as it is enchanting. In radiant prose layered with passion, regret, sensuality and wry humor, Burmese Lessons tells the captivating story of how one woman came to love a wounded, beautiful country and a gifted man who has given his life to the struggle for political change.

It's the Fourth of July, a hot and heady time. Fireworks spark as a town celebrates the bloody fight for Independence. Teena Maguire and her daughter Bethie decide to leave the heat of the crowd and head home from the party. As they take the cooling walk home through the park, Teena feels uneasy. A group of boys catch sight of the pair from across the lake. The boys scent blood. They tease Teena, chase her and corner her in front of her daughter. Rape begins with what is almost unsayable, and tells of the brutality and cowardice that overtakes a small town in the aftermath of the attack. A diamond-hard dissection of modern mores, Rape is not only the story of Teena and Bethie and their insolent assailants but also the tale of their silent champion, a man who knows the meaning of justice. And love.

The story’s main character Kabil was a top-ranking student activist who actively participated in the armed struggle for the liberation of Bangladesh from across the border in India. His departure from Dhaka to participate in the nine months –long warfare cost him love of his life- Rokhi, the daughter of his uncle who had earlier married an Urdu speaking immigrant settler girl in Dhaka. Meanwhile, Rokhi’s earlier suitor, Andy, after being rejected by her, fell in love with Kabil’s maternal cousin Momi who herself was dreaming about marrying Kabil since her childhood. However, since Kabil was indifferent to Momi’s love, she wanted to love anew and marry Andy. Since the untenable political situation during the liberation war forced Andy and Rohki leave the country, Kabil proposed, after his return from India, to marry Momi. But Momi being hurt by Kabil’s earlier indifference and hurt by Andy’s unexpected departure declined Kabil’s proposal.
