Der Tagungsband vereinigt erstmals Beitrage von Rundfunk- und Buchhistorikern zur unmittelbaren Nachkriegszeit zwischen 1945 und 1949. Die politischen, sozialen und kulturellen Ausgangsbedingungen fur beide Medien werden ebenso dargestellt (A. Schildt, R. Wittmann), wie die Entwicklung einzelner Anstalten oder Verlage. Die Verschiedenartigkeit der Entfaltungsmoglichkeiten in West und Ost zeigen die Beitrageuber den Sudwestfunk (M. Nix) und die Anfange des Rundfunks in der Sowjetischen Besatzungszone (W. Muhl-Benninghaus), wo auch die Buch- und Literaturpolitik eine eigene Entwicklung nahm (S. Lokatis). Verlage wie Rowohlt in Hamburg, der denLiteraturbedarf durch seine preiswerten Rotationsromane deckte (E. Ziegler) oder der neu gegrundete Aufbau Verlag in Ost-Berlin (C. Wurm) sind symptomatisch fur die Verlagslandschaft der Zeit. Ein Uberblick uber die Quellenuberlieferung in beiden Medien zeigt grosse Defizite aus den Jahren des Wiederaufbaus.

The nexus between travel, writing and media in the contemporary world is dense: travel practice is increasingly interwoven with media; representations in old and new media are co-present and converge. Digitisation has had a profound impact on the practice and mediation of travel, but this volume aims to show that travel and its representation have always been enlaced with media. With contributions by experts in literary and cultural studies, journalism studies and informatics, the book takes a multi- and interdisciplinary approach and covers a wide range of media, from the hand-crafted album to social media. It illustrates how current transformations invite us to revisit earlier periods of travel writing and their media environments, and to explore the ways in which contemporary forms of mediation are prefigured by earlier practices and forms. The West German novel, radio play, and television series, Through the Night (Am grünen Strand der Spree, 1955-1960), which depicts the mass shootings of Jews in the occupied Soviet Union during World War II, has been gradually regaining popularity in recent years. Originally circulated in post-war West Germany, the cultural memories of the holocaust embedded within this multi-medium construction present different forms of historical conceptualization. Using numerous archival sources, Microhistories of Memory brings forward three comprehensive case studies on the impact, actors, and materiality of accounts surrounding questions of circulation of cultural memory, audience reception, production, and popularity of Through the Night in its different mediums since its first appearance.

Der Beginn des Zweiten Weltkrieges liegt mehr als 50 Jahre zurück. Bis heute haben aber die Fragen, mit denen dieses katastrophale Ereignis alle Deutschen konfrontiert, nicht an Bedeutung und Aktualität verloren. Vielmehr fordert das öffentliche Gedächtnis mit jedem Generationswechsel neue Bilder von diesem Krieg. Im Rückblick auf den Zeitraum seit 1945 läßt sich ein Zyklus von Erinnern, Verstummen und erneutem Erinnern ausmachen, der bereits dreifach durchlaufen worden ist. Insofern ist der Umgang mit dem Thema in den deutschen Medien gleich nach Kriegsende auch für die Gegenwart aufschlußreich. Deutungen und Formen des Gedenkens, die heute praktiziert werden, haben selber inzwischen eine Geschichte. Mehrfach glaubte man bereits in beiden Teilen Deutschlands, daß die Schuldfrage gelöst sei und die Kriegserfahrung bewältigt. Jedesmal stellte sich heraus, daß die Deutschen noch immer in der Schuld sind, nicht nur aus der Perspektive ihrer europäischen Nachbarn. Die Beiträge in diesem Band gehen auf den Anfang eines unabgeschlossenen Prozesses zurück. Die Befragung gilt nicht den Menschen, sondern den Medien. Gefragt wird, wie in der Literatur, in der Presse, im Fernsehen und Film in den 40er und 50er Jahren mit dem Krieg umgegangen worden ist, welche Bilder davon die Literatur, die Presse, Fernsehen, Film und Hörspiel anzubieten hatten und welche Tendenzen sich dabei in den beiden deutschen Staaten, in Österreich, Polen und Frankreich nachweisen lassen. Eine Reflexion auf die neunziger Jahre macht das Thema spannend, denn dadurch wird den Bildern vom Krieg, die im wiedervereinigten Deutschland im Umlauf sind, ihr Ort im Zyklus zugewiesen: Ein Beitrag zur wieder nötig gewordenen Orientierung.

A Social History of Early Rock 'n' Roll in Germany explores the people and spaces of St. Pauli's rock'n'roll scene in the 1960s. Starting in 1960, young British rockers were hired to entertain tourists in Hamburg's red-light district around the Reeperbahn in the area of St. Pauli. German youths quickly joined in to experience the forbidden thrill of rock'n'roll, and used African American sounds to distance themselves from the old Nazi generation. In 1962 the Star Club opened and drew international attention for hosting some of the Beatles' most influential performances. In this book, Julia Sneeringer weaves together this story of youth culture with histories of sex and gender, popular culture, media, and subculture. By exploring the history of one locale in depth, Sneeringer offers a welcome contribution to the scholarly literature on space, place, sound and the city, and pays overdue attention to the impact that Hamburg had upon music and style. She is also careful to place performers such as The Beatles back into the social, spatial, and musical contexts that shaped them and their generation. Was die Hörer vom Radio erwarten, ist in erster Linie Unterhaltung. Was die Rundfunkjournalisten in der DDR zu leisten hatten, war jedoch vor allem ideologische 'Überzeugungsarbeit' nach den Vorgaben der SED-Spitze. Zugleich sollten sie aber auch die Hörer binden und von den 'Feindsendern' fernhalten. Es werden einzelne Unterhaltungs- und Propaganda-Sendungen untersucht, der Erfolg des Jugendradios DT 64 analysiert und die konspirativ organisierten geheimsender auf beiden Seiten der deutschen Grenze vorgestellt.
