"Bukomo" means Development, Empowerment in the Zambian language of the Kaonde tribe of North Western Province. The writer describes the root causes of poverty, what can be done in Zambia specifically, and in Africa in general, and how the media portray the issues of HIV/AIDS and orphans in Africa. The writer talks about growing up in rural areas and about the struggles that girl children in particular go through. She proposes ideas for what the government can do to fight poverty, to promote human rights, and to reduce the prevalence of street children in the cities of Zambia, and how it can help to encourage sustainable development to enrich the rural communities in Zambia. All proceeds from this book will go towards Buya Village Foundation a non-profit grassroot organisation working to promote literacy and skills training to combat poverty in rural Zambia.

As in many countries throughout Sub-Saharan Africa and around the developing world, poverty in Zambia is overwhelmingly a rural phenomenon. In 2010 the moderate poverty rate in rural areas was 74 percent, more than double the urban poverty rate of 35 percent. The economic growth continued throughout the decade, reaching an impressive annual average of 5.7 percent, and by 2011 the World Bank recognized Zambia as a middle-income country. Rising incomes have been densely concentrated among a relatively small segment of the urban workforce, while extremely high urban unemployment rates effectively block the rural labor force from participating in the country's more dynamic economic sectors, a phenomenon that is discussed in detail in this analysis. The principal challenge faced by Zambian policymakers and the international donor community will be to extend the returns to growth throughout the country and especially to the rural poor. Marginal improvements in economic and social indicators can be accomplished through targeted interventions in the rural economy, but enduring, structural income growth and the widespread reduction of poverty will only be achievable through broad-based employment creation in the urban industrial and service sectors. This report is organized as follows: chapter one discusses poverty and inequality; chapter two gives poverty profile; chapter three discusses labor market, employment, and wages; and chapter four focuses on poverty and social spending.

An Enterprise Map Of Zambia written by John Sutton and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04 with Business & Economics categories.

Over the first decade of the new millennium, Zambia's real GDP rose by 80%. Much of this rise came from the mining sector, but a substantial fraction came from the manufacturing sector, whose output rose by 50% in real terms over the decade. This volume provides a detailed account of Zambia's current industrial capabilities. From mining-related industries through general manufacturing, agribusiness and construction, it describes the structure of each of the country's major industries. It provides detailed profiles of fifty leading industrial companies that together represent the frontier of current capabilities in each area of activity. Along the way, it addresses key issues of current interest. Where did the capabilities of Zambia's leading industrial companies come from? How many of these companies came from abroad? How many had their origins in the public sector? And how many were set up by domestic trading companies that began local manufacturing operations? The copper industry generates three-quarters of Zambia's export earnings. But to what extent has Zambia developed downstream capabilities in the manufacture of copper products? How large a role is China playing in the flow of Foreign Direct Investment to Zambia? And in what industries are Chinese companies active? This is the fourth volume in John Sutton's "Enterprise Map" series, which profiles the industrial capabilities of selected countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Volumes on Ethiopia, Ghana and Tanzania have already appeared. The forthcoming fifth volume will be on Mozambique.

This volume focuses on the huge advances in the last 25 years on the use of this animal model for biomedical research (cancer, heart disease and neurodegeneration), fundamental neuroscience and basic subterranean biology. In 2013, Science magazine named the naked mole-rat as the Vertebrate of the Year. This was partly due to research carried out documenting its extreme longevity, negligible senescence, and prolonged maintenance of cancer free, good health well into old age as well as seminal work on mechanisms involved in these processes, pain and hypoxia resistance. In addition to this research focus on longevity and chronic diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease, the naked mole-rat has also made a substantial contribution to the fields of ecophysiology, neuroscience and behavior. With international contributions, this book provides a valuable text for zoological students, behavioral scientists and biomedical researchers.
