"Citizen Coke demostrate[s] a complete lack of understanding about…the Coca-Cola system—past and present." —Ted Ryan, the Coca-Cola Company By examining “the real thing” ingredient by ingredient, this brilliant history shows how Coke used a strategy of outsourcing and leveraged free public resources, market muscle, and lobbying power to build a global empire on the sale of sugary water. Coke became a giant in a world of abundance but is now embattled in a world of scarcity, its products straining global resources and fueling crises in public health.

Counter-Cola charts the history of one of the world’s most influential and widely known corporations, the Coca-Cola Company. It tells the story of how, over the past 130 years, the corporation has tried to make its products and brands physically and culturally a central part of global daily life in over 200 countries. Through this story of Coca-Cola, Amanda Ciafone reveals the pursuit of corporate power within the key economic transformations—liberal, developmentalist, neoliberal—of the 20th and 21st centuries. A story of global capitalism, it is not without contest. People throughout the world have redeployed the corporation, its commodities, and brand images to challenge the injustices of daily life under capitalism. As Ciafone shows, assertions of national economic interests, critiques of cultural homogenization, fights for workers’ rights, movements for environmental justice, and debates over public health have obliged the corporation to justify itself in terms of the common good, demonstrating capitalism’s imperative to assimilate critiques or reveal its limits.

The book explores overconsumption, a by-product of affluence; and underconsumption, linked to poverty, and provides 'behind the scenes' exposes of the devastating environmental impacts of some of our most popular products, from plastic bags, to paper, to mobile phones. Published annually in 28 languages, each edition draws on the breadth of expertise of Worldwatch's award-winning team of writers and researchers. Cola S Journey written by Cola Bilkuei and has been published by Macmillan Publishers Aus. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-11-01 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

In 1987, Cola Bilkuei, a young boy from the Dinka tribe in the southern Sudan, was forcibly recruited into Sudan People's Liberation Army. For three months, he and hundreds of other children from his tribe were marched from southern Sudan to a military training camp inside Ethiopia. Once they arrived at the camp, exhausted and terrified, they were systematically brutalised as SPLA officers began to turn them into child soldiers. The children were taught how to handle a rifle, how to fight and how to kill. It was a programme designed to prepare them for the savage civil war being fought between the SPLA and the Muslim government of Sudan based in the north of the country. Yet Cola refused to be brutalised. He knew there was a better life somewhere and he was determined to find it. After two years, he escaped from the camp and began an extraordinary odyssey down the length of Africa. Without money, a passport or official papers of any kind, he fled Ethiopia back into Sudan, from Sudan he travelled to Uganda, from Uganda to Kenya, from Kenya to Tanzania, from Tanzania to Malawi, from Malawi to Mozambique, from Mozambique to Zimbabwe and from Zimbabwe to South Africa. Finally, after getting accepted into a UN refugee program in South Africa he managed to come to Australia in 2003 as a refugee. His journey from that military camp had taken him fourteen years, living illegally, relying on strangers for help and scraping a living at whatever he could do, as well as educating himself to read and write along the way. This book is the story of Cola's extraordinary journey. Although set against a backdrop of brutality and suffering, it is a story of incredible resilience and, above all, of hope.
