A comprehensive description of Beethoven's sketchbooks - bound books of music paper in which Beethoven made sketches for his compositions from about 1798 - has been long felt by Beethoven scholars. Although almost all the sketchbooks have survived in one form or another, it became clear in the 1960s that they were in a state of disarray. A reconstruction of their original condition was essential to the proper study of their musical contents. The book comprises: * Introductory chapters which summarize the ways in which past scholars have treated the sketches, explain the bewildering nomenclature that surrounds them, and proceed to more detailed discussions of the principal collections through which they passed. There is a central portion consisting of detailed accounts of individual desk and pocket sketchbooks. Each account follows the same basic plan: provenance of the manuscript, problems of reconstruction, chronology, contents, and structural chart. Later chapters deal with the sketches in score for the late quartets and highlight some of the problems. Beethovian scholars and students, especially those interested in the compositional process. Rediscovering The British World written by Phillip Alfred Buckner and has been published by University of Calgary Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with History categories.
Rediscovering the British World is one part of an ongoing attempt to approach British Imperial history from a different viewpoint, placing the colonies of settlement at the centre. Editors Phillip Buckner and Douglas Francis have included nineteen essays from expert scholars in the field, which cover a broad range of cultural, social, and intellectual topics in British imperial history from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. The essays focus on the history of Britain and the Empire, with considerable emphasis on the self-governing dominions of Canada, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. They attempt to show the centrality of the Empire in the history of the nations created by the British diaspora overseas, while at the same time calling into question the extent of the existence of a "British World." The goal is not to wax nostalgic, but rather to re-examine the complex phenomenon of this far-reaching empire and to shed light on the ways in which it has shaped our world. Alvar Aalto written by Malcolm Quantrill and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990-02-01 with Architecture categories.
Alvar Aalto was remarkably inventive in architecture and industrial design. Moreover, his command of technology was integrated with a humanistic style of building, and like Saarinen and Frank Lloyd Wright he sought an organic synthesis of his structures with their surroundings. Aalto's success in approaching these ideals may account for the extraordinary spread of his influence on an international scale. In this broad study of Aalto's work, Malcolm Quantrill assesses its development in terms of two powerful sources-the Finnish National Romantic movement and the Modern movement in architecture. His critique of Aalto's most significant buildings and furniture designs is complemented by photographs of many stages of their creation, from the spontaneity of initial sketches to the completed detail. Professor Quantrill first met Alvar and Elissa Aalto at Muuratsalo in June 1953, and he has been studying and photographing Aalto's buildings ever since. His book provides striking insights into the work of one of the greatest architects of the century.

The epic glitter and glamour of Hollywood's Golden AgeIn the period 1916-1966, during its so-called Golden Age, Hollywood developed a passion for the ancient world and produced many epic movie blockbusters. The studios used every device they could find to wow audiences with the spectacle of antiquity. In this unique study, Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones shows how Hollywood carefully and skilfully created the popular modern perception of the ancient world. He analyses how producers, art directors, costumiers, publicity agents, movie stars, and inevitably, 'a cast of thousands' literally designed and crafted the ancient world from scratch. This lively book offers a technical as well as a theoretical guide to a much-neglected area of film studies and reception studies that will appeal to anyone working in these disciplines.Key FeaturesLavishly illustrated with film stills and examples of rare and fascinating marketing material Broad coverage of films including The King of Kings, The Sign of the Cross, Samson and Delilah, Land of the Pharoahs, The Ten Commandments, Ben-Hur, Spartacus and Cleopatra Considers different aspects of film production: the Hollywood set, costume design, the role of the movie star, dialogue, narration and musicSets a new agenda for exploring the relationship between history and film and between history and visual cultureExplores the archaeology of stardom examining the onscreen/offscreen images of Elizabeth Taylor, Charlton Heston and Rita HayworthIncludes a filmography, chronological outline and study aids.
