Features step-by-step examples based on actual data and connects fundamental mathematical modeling skills and decision making concepts to everyday applicability Featuring key linear programming, matrix, and probability concepts, Finite Mathematics: Models and Applications emphasizes cross-disciplinary applications that relate mathematics to everyday life. The book provides a unique combination of practical mathematical applications to illustrate the wide use of mathematics in fields ranging from business, economics, finance, management, operations research, and the life and social sciences. In order to emphasize the main concepts of each chapter, Finite Mathematics: Models and Applications features plentiful pedagogical elements throughout such as special exercises, end notes, hints, select solutions, biographies of key mathematicians, boxed key principles, a glossary of important terms and topics, and an overview of use of technology. The book encourages the modeling of linear programs and their solutions and uses common computer software programs such as LINDO. In addition to extensive chapters on probability and statistics, principles and applications of matrices are included as well as topics for enrichment such as the Monte Carlo method, game theory, kinship matrices, and dynamic programming. Supplemented with online instructional support materials, the book features coverage including: Algebra Skills Mathematics of Finance Matrix Algebra Geometric Solutions Simplex Methods Application Models Set and Probability Relationships Random Variables and Probability Distributions Markov Chains Mathematical Statistics Enrichment in Finite Mathematics An ideal textbook, Finite Mathematics: Models and Applications is intended for students in fields from entrepreneurial and economic to environmental and social science, including many in the arts and humanities.

This second edition of A Beginner’s Guide to Finite Mathematics takes a distinctly applied approach to finite mathematics at the freshman and sophomore level. Topics are presented sequentially: the book opens with a brief review of sets and numbers, followed by an introduction to data sets, histograms, means and medians. Counting techniques and the Binomial Theorem are covered, which provides the foundation for elementary probability theory; this, in turn, leads to basic statistics. This new edition includes chapters on game theory and financial mathematics. Requiring little mathematical background beyond high school algebra, the text will be especially useful for business and liberal arts majors.

Finite Mathematics: An Introduction with Applications in Business, Social Sciences, and Music presents core concepts of finite mathematics in a clear, intuitive fashion designed to reinforce understanding. The book begins with finite mathematics foundations, with explanations and exercises on combinatorics, logic, set theory, sequences and series, functions and functional notation, elementary probability, linear programming and systems, and Markov chains. Later chapters explore and explain a range of finite mathematics applications, from game theory to voting, apportionment, finance, graph theory, and the science and physics of music.Written with an accessible, example-based approach, this book engages STEM and non-STEM students alike, preparing them for courses across a range of quantitative fields, social sciences, and the liberal arts. Problem-solving exercises are featured at the conclusion of each subsection, with corresponding answers in the appendix. The book is also accompanied by a solutions manual, sample projects assignments, tests, lecture slides, and datasets on a companion website. - Introduces and reinforces core elements of Finite Mathematics in a sequential fashion - Considers a range of application areas, from game theory to voting, apportionment, finance, graph theory, and music - Engages STEM and non-STEM majors as they complete their initial requirements or general education requirement in Mathematics or Quantitative Reasoning - Includes a solutions manual, sample projects assignments, sample tests, lecture slides, and datasets on a companion website

Still another book on finite math? Why? Hasnt everything that should have been said been said? No, I would argue. The shortcoming that troubles me most about the books I am familiar with is their failure to provide perspective on what math technique and the use of technology can do for us and its limitations. This can only be addressed through vigorous and sustained use of the mathematical modeling perspective, which is a hallmark of this books exposition. A point continually stressed is that reaching a mathematical answer to a problem is not the end of the story. It is in a sense the end of a chapter, but the next chapter is concerned with questions about whether and how the mathematical answer should be implemented. Also addressed is the question of what to consider when more than one answer is obtained for a problem.

University-level mathematicians--whether focused on research or teaching--recognize the need to develop effective ways for teaching undergraduate mathematics. The Mathematics Department of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology hosted a symposium on effective teaching, featuring internationally distinguished researchers deeply interested in teaching and mathematics educators possessing established reputations for developing successful teaching techniques. This book stems from that symposium.
