Tracing the political evolution of plantation labor in Malaysia from the colonial period to the present, this original study focuses on the formation and control of plantation labor, and the manner in which it resisted capital. The author discusses the emergence and demise of left-wing unions in the plantations and the nature of the colonial state's policy toward labor in the post-war period. He includes a detailed account of the events which led to the formation of the National Union of Plantation Workers, the emergence of alternative unions in the 1960s, and the fundamental neglect of plantation workers. By looking in detail at the role of the state and its relationship to the plantation social structure, the author concludes that the state is basically autonomous and that the capital formed in the plantations cannot be defined as merchant.

This collection of country studies explores changing relationships between the state, employers and labour in an increasingly internationalized world economy. It covers ten countries and examines the tensions and contradictions caused by neo-liberal market agendas. The authors express concern at the potentially ravaging effects of market deregulation on organized labour and present a critical account of state efforts to emulate desired models of national economic development. While the central core of the book concerns itself with changing labour relations, this is placed within the wider context of state and employer strategy, and covers issues such as labour market segmentation, welfare and taxation regimes and varying approaches to corporatism.

Capitalist Development In Korea written by Dae-oup Chang and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-01-13 with Business & Economics categories.

Contrary to the widely-held view that the East Asian "developmental state" is neutral in terms of the relationship between capital and labour – a benign co-operation between state officials and businessmen to organise economic development – this book argues that in fact the developmental state exists to promote the interests of capital over the interests of labour. Dae-oup Chang asserts that there has been a deliberate mystification concerning the reality of this process. This book presents a radical, Marxist critique of state development theory. It both explains the exploitative functions of the state, looking at the emergence of the particular form of capitalist state in the context of the formation and reproduction of capital relations in Korea; and also traces the origin and development of the process of mystification whereby the capitalist state has been characterised as the autonomous developmental state. In addition, the book provides a comprehensive analysis of labour relations in Korea both before and after the 1998 financial crisis, demonstrating continuing capital relations, state transition and class struggle.
