Capitalised Education is not a biography of Kate Middleton, but, rather, understands her wedding on April 29th 2011 as a 'plateau', wherein a complex knot of social, political and economic forces collided. The chapters of the book make up a non-linear history of the royal wedding, a history that is underpinned by the ways in which power has been handled by the British royal family through time.

This book develops an approach to school development which is contextual in that it considers both the larger social structure of which the school is a part and those special features of schools themselves which impact upon the possibilities for their improvement. The book derives from a eight year longitudinal study of school evaluation at St Mary's College, a Catholic girls school in Tasmania. It builds upon, and provides a practical exploration of, such recent developments as Straratt and Caldwell's work on educational vision, the role of evaluation in measuring the extent to which a school's vision has become reality; the effective implementation and management of change, and Coleman and Hoffer's notion of social capital and the importance of school community networks in effective education.

This book is an attempt to describe a school's potential for improvement in new intrinsic terms ... in terms of its internal intellectual capital; the resource that comes from relationships between the school and its stakeholders, from its ability to innovate and manage change, from its infrastructure, and from the knowledge and transferable competencies of its staff. Intellectual capital is at the core of what society deems to be the purpose and definition of successful schooling, and being largely internal, promises maximum leverage in the search for improvement.

This book focuses on the relationship between cultural capital and student achievement. It fills the gap in the literature on large-scale quantitative studies of the effects of cultural capital. In particular, the review of empirical evidence presented, especially that from studies analyzing large-scale, international data from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), makes a substantial contribution to the literature. This review addresses the knowledge gap on reviews investigating the effects of different forms of cultural capital on student achievement as compared to the more established evidence base in the related field of socioeconomic status.

Amid the increased use of the notion of cultural capital as a theoretical or analytical tool in educational research remain many different definitions, misconceptions, and appropriations of the concept. Cultural capital--the cultural relevent knowledge, competencies, skills, or abilities valued in a particular context--acts as a form of social currency in educational settings. This monograph extensively reviews the past thirty years of research, investigating the strengths and weaknesses regarding the widely varying uses of cultural capital in educational research. Althougth the concept of cultural capital holds great promise for explaining the perpetuation of power and privilege, unfillled hopes remain. The use of the economic methopher implied by cultural capital, the lack of attention to race annd gender inequalities, the possibility for misunderstanding in transferring the concept between countries and a general implied deficiency model present limitations in many studies of cultural capital. An understanding of cultural capital, if appropiately theorized about and applied to research, has the promise of helping to understand and transofrm educational inequalities. This is Volume 36 Issue 1 of the Jossey-Bass publication ASHE Higher Education Report. Each monograph in the series is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education problem, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.
