Esplose in volo il jet che la sera del 27 ottobre 1962 doveva atterrare all’aeroporto di Linate. Su quell’aereo viaggiava Enrico Mattei, fondatore e presidente dell’Eni, e – come dichiarò Fanfani molti anni dopo – l’“abbattimento” del piccolo velivolo segnò l’inizio del terrorismo in Italia. Sovente adombrata dall’agiografia su Mattei, la storia di Eugenio Cefis si lega a doppio filo alle vicissitudini industriali e politiche dell’Italia repubblicana. Cefis e Mattei diventano personaggi di Petrolio, il romanzo incompiuto di Pier Paolo Pasolini, a partire dal settembre 1974, quando lo scrittore ricevette da Elvio Fachinelli alcuni materiali sull’allora presidente della Montedison. Cosa lega il fondatore dell’Eni all’intellettuale corsaro? Come si incrociano le loro storie con le vicende di Eugenio Cefis? Mattei e Cefis militano nella Resistenza e consolidano il loro rapporto nel dopoguerra. Nominato subito dopo la Liberazione commissario straordinario dell’Agip, Mattei chiama al suo fianco Cefis, che diverrà il suo vice e poi, dopo la sua scomparsa, presidente dell’Eni. Pasolini è invece affascinato da un discorso sulle multinazionali rivolto da Cefis agli allievi dell’Accademia militare di Modena e da un libro su Cefis che ne denuncia lo strapotere, l’arricchimento e i rapporti con i partiti e gli apparati dello Stato. E a partire dal 1975, l’anno del massacro al lido di Ostia, inserisce in Petrolio una serie di capitoli su Cefis e Mattei in cui avanza la tesi della eliminazione del fondatore dell’Eni, ribaltando la versione ufficiale dell’incidente aereo e facendo di Cefis un personaggio a tinte fosche.
