In Between the Seas, Deborah Paci takes a comparative view of islandness in island identities through case studies of islands in the Baltic and Mediterranean Seas. These case studies primarily include, in the Baltic case, the Åland Islands, Gotland, Saaremaa, Hiiumaa and Ruhnu; and in the Mediterranean case, Sicily, Malta, Sardinia and Corsica. Examining multiple sites of these islands' identities such as history, environmental concerns and governance systems, this book provides a historical perspective into the relations between islands and the larger geopolitical regions around them, as well as historicizing 'insularist' rhetoric deployed by pro-independence groups within them. Paci examines the changing role and increasing political importance of islands in the European Union against the history of island insularity and offers a significant contribution to the wider field of island studies.

La storia della città di Nizza, che diede i natali a Giuseppe Garibaldi, è poco conosciuta agli italiani e più passa il tempo più si sbiadisce il ricordo della sua italianità. Ed è per questo motivo che Carlo Silvano ha pubblicato un agevole libretto intitolato "Breve storia di Nizza e di altri territori italofoni", in cui propone al lettore una riflessione sulle beffe della storia, in una chiave culturale e non rivendicazionista. Leggendo questo volumetto il lettore potrà così scoprire lati oscuri della nostra storia risorgimentale: la cessione della città di Nizza alla Francia nel 1860 fu un doloroso tributo che - molto probabilmente - si poteva evitare. Ceduta al governo di Parigi, Nizza subì una feroce francesizzazione con la chiusura, in particolare, di tutte le scuole e i giornali di lingua italiana. E ancora oggi la Francia continua - nei confronti delle minoranze etniche e linguistiche presenti sul suo territorio - un'opera di francesizzazione, omogenizzando tutte le differenze, e ricchezze culturali, piuttosto che perseguire i principi di fratellanza, uguaglianza e libertà. Nel volumetto è inserito un significativo capitolo sull'eroina nizzarda Catarina Segurana, la quale durante un assedio franco-turco guidò alla vittoria i suoi concittadini nel 1543. E proprio a Caterina Segurana è dedicata una poesia, a firma di Adriana Michielin, inserita nel libretto. “Breve storia di Nizza e di altri territori italofoni” è un volumetto pratico e scorrevole, adatto a tutti, da consigliare e regalare soprattutto ai ragazzi delle scuole medie.
