Excerpt from Carthage and the Carthaginians All these things are possible, even if they are not very probable. But we cannot venture to hope that any such discoveries, whatever their kind or number, will ever enable us to know Carthage, as we know Athens or Rome, from its own citizens; or will do more than throw a few scattered lights upon that imperial City which - all but unknown to us during five centuries of her growth and her true grandeur - blazes forth into the light of day only in that century which witnessed her heroic struggles and her fall. Excerpt from The Young Carthaginian: Or a Struggle for Empire My dear Lads, - When I was a boy at school, if I remember rightly, our sympathies were generally with the Carthaginians as against the Romans. Why they were so, except that one generally sympathizes with the unfortunate, I do not quite know; certainly we had but a hazy idea as to the merits of the struggle and knew but little of its events, for the Latin and Greek authors, which serve as the ordinary text-books in schools, do not treat of the Punic wars. That it was a struggle for empire at first, and latterly one for existence on the part of Carthage, that Hannibal was a great and skilful general, that he defeated the Romans at Trebia, Lake Trasimenus, and Cannae, and all but took Rome, and that the Romans behaved with bad faith and great cruelty at the capture of Carthage, represents, I think, pretty nearly the sum total of our knowledge. I am sure I should have liked to know a great deal more about this struggle for the empire of the world, and as I think that most of you would also like to do so, I have chosen this subject for my story. Fortunately there is no lack of authentic material from which to glean the incidents of the struggle. Polybius visited all the passes of the Alps some forty years after the event, and conversed with tribesmen who had witnessed the passage of Hannibal, and there can be no doubt that his descriptions are far more accurate than those of Livy, who wrote somewhat later and had no personal knowledge of the affair. Numbers of books have been written as to the identity of the passes traversed by Hannibal. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Carthage of the Phoenicians: In the Light of Modern Excavation IN compiling this? Small book, the object of the writer has been to gather together in an epitomized form, for English readers, all that is at present known, and all that has been recently discovered, concerning the earliest inhabitants of Carthage. Modern curiosity seems to be stimulated on their behalf by the fact that they are, or have been up to the present, a lost and forgotten people, with whose sea-faring, commercial and colonizing characteristics we are acquainted only by hearsay - Roman hearsay - having the disadvantages of bias, prejudice and the contempt which goes with conquest. Modern excavation in the Punic Tombs of Carthage has given this people an opportunity of at last speaking for themselves, and it is to this voice from the grave that we have now to hearken, straining our ears with patient sympathy, as the pick-axes of the monks of Carthage proceed to liberate the stifled spirit of the past. OUR knowledge of the Third Punic War is derived almost exclusively from Appian, a mere compiler who did not live till the time of the Emperor Hadrian, and whose accuracy, where he draws upon his own resources, may be judged from the fact that he places Saguntum to the north of the Ebro, and makes Britain only half a day's sail from Spain.1 Fortunately for us, however, there is good reason to believe that his account of the fall of Carthage is drawn directly from Polybius, who not only stands in the highest rank as an historian, but was himself present and bore a part in the scenes which he described.1 Lord Bacon has remarked in one of his aphorisms, that while the.stream of time has brought down floating on its surface many works which are light and valueless, those which were weightier
