In the case of Hannibal it is different. Spain and Italy are accessible, as Persia and Afghanistan are not, and the topography of the theatre of the Second Punic War can be readily examined and ascertained. No historian of Hannibal appears, however, to have studied his campaigns on the ground. Excerpt from The Young Carthaginian: Or a Struggle for Empire My dear Lads, - When I was a boy at school, if I remember rightly, our sympathies were generally with the Carthaginians as against the Romans. Why they were so, except that one generally sympathizes with the unfortunate, I do not quite know; certainly we had but a hazy idea as to the merits of the struggle and knew but little of its events, for the Latin and Greek authors, which serve as the ordinary text-books in schools, do not treat of the Punic wars. That it was a struggle for empire at first, and latterly one for existence on the part of Carthage, that Hannibal was a great and skilful general, that he defeated the Romans at Trebia, Lake Trasimenus, and Cannae, and all but took Rome, and that the Romans behaved with bad faith and great cruelty at the capture of Carthage, represents, I think, pretty nearly the sum total of our knowledge. I am sure I should have liked to know a great deal more about this struggle for the empire of the world, and as I think that most of you would also like to do so, I have chosen this subject for my story. Fortunately there is no lack of authentic material from which to glean the incidents of the struggle. Polybius visited all the passes of the Alps some forty years after the event, and conversed with tribesmen who had witnessed the passage of Hannibal, and there can be no doubt that his descriptions are far more accurate than those of Livy, who wrote somewhat later and had no personal knowledge of the affair. Excerpt from Hannibal's March Through the Alps Before he acquired the friendship of the Scipio who afterwards became famous as the conqueror of Carthage in the third Punic War. Polybius had received the education of a statesman and a soldier, and his intimacy with Scipio led to his accompany ing that general in the campaigns against Carthage and against Numantia, in which it is believed that he rendered some service as an engineer. He wrote his history for the purpose Of explaining to his Greek countrymen how Rome had come to be the mistress Of the world. In pursuit of the information which he required he travelled widely, and in particular made the journey across the Alps in order to follow and to see for himself the route that had been taken by Hannibal. He says that he had had the opportunity of inquiring about the events of the march from men who had taken part in it. His residence in Rome began half a century after the march, and he was then between thirty-one and forty-one years old. He may very well have had the opportunity of dis cussing the events oi 218 with Carthaginians who had accompanied Hannibal, with Greek officers who had been on his staff, and with Romans who had taken part in the operations against him. As he wrote he had before him the accounts of earlier authors, some of whom were Roman, and one probably a Greek. In point of time he stood to the events of 218 as a man who was born in 1871 would stand to the Crimean War.
