An intriguing class of biological periodicity consists of rhythms with about 24-hour periods occurring at every level of eukaryotic organization. Progress is being made in understanding these rhythms. The six chapters of this work include a brief introduction to circadian (24-hour) rhythms, a survey of circadian organization at the cellular level, and a description of the important microorganisms that have served as experimental models for biochemical analysis. Also considered are relations between cell division cycles and circadian oscillators, as well as some general and theoretical aspects. Where appropriate, parallels are drawn to neuronal oscillators. This volume will introduce and critically appraise modern chronobiology; its extensive illustrations and comprehensive up-to-date bibliography will make it an authoritative reference.

This book addresses the molecular bases of some of the most important biochemical rhythms known at the cellular level. Clarifying the mechanism of these oscillatory phenomena is of key importance for understanding the origin as well as the physiological function of these rhythms, and the conditions in which simple periodic behaviour transforms into complex oscillations, including bursting and chaos. The approach rests on the analysis of theoretical models closely related to experimental observations. Among the main rhythms considered are glycolytic oscillations observed in yeast and muscle, oscillations of cyclic AMP in Dictyostelium amoebae, intracellular calcium oscillations observed in a variety of cell types, the mitotic oscillator that drives the cell division cycle in eukaryotes, and circadian oscillations of the period protein (PER) in Drosophila. For each of these phenomena, experimental facts are reviewed and mathematical models presented.

Profound progress has been made in the fields of chronobiology and psychobiology within the past decade, in theory, experiment and clinical application. This volume integrates these new developments on all levels from the molecular, genetic and cellular to the psycho social processes of everyday life. We present a balanced variety of research from workers around the globe, who discuss the funda mental significance of their approach for a new understanding of the central role of ultradian rhythms in the self-organizing and adaptive dynamics of all life processes. The years since the publication of Ultra dian rhythms in physiology and behavior by Schultz and Lavie in 1985 have seen a burgeoning realization of the ubiquity and importance of ultradian rhythms within and between every level of the psychobiological hierarchy. The experimental evidence lies scattered through a disparate litera ture, and this volume attempts, albeit in a highly selective manner, to bring together some of the different strands. The editors are very conscious of the omission of many important current aspects; e.g. we have not included any of the fascinating and indeed long and well-established experiments with plants (Bunning 1971, 1977; Guillaume and Koukkari 1987; Millet et al. 1988; 10hnsson et al. 1990) that are widely regarded as having initiated the whole field of chronobiology (De Mairan 1729). Neither have we reviewed recent developments on glycolytic oscillations, since a great deal of the seminal work was already completed by 1973 (Chance et al. 1973).

Rambling of an elderly biochemist Most biochemists of my generation, who were trying to discover the pathways of metabolism, simply ignored membranes; or regarded them as a nuisance. Think of the difficulties experienced in studies on cytochromoxidase which one could not separate from « insoluble material )} or again of the desperate efforts during a quarter of a century to unravel oxidative phosphorylation without paying much attention to lipidic membranes, altough the system was known to be associated with them. Hence the amazement and the general skepticism that met at first Mitchell's theory, which was giving membranes the central function they deserve in oxidative phosphorylation and photosynthesis. This, I believe, was a turning point; enzymologists thereafter became aware of the importance of the membranes. Neurophysiologists, of course, had long been interested in the outer cell membrane with its electrical properties and the ion potentials. Histologists and electronmicroscopists also, who observed inside the cell.organelles of which membranes are essential components: nucleus, nucleoli, mitchondria, lysosomes,Golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum, chloroplasts. For them at least, a cell did not look like a mere bag full of enzymes and small molecules; they knew, they could see that it is a highly structured system divided into many compartments by membranous formations.

New techniques in molecular biology have brought spectacular new insights into the study of evolution at the molecular level. This book presents the resulting relatively new concept of "molecular phylogeny", with an overview of current accomplishments and the future direction of research on organelle origin and evolution and the biology of the "higher cell".

Everyone has heard of nature's "biological clocks", the phenomenon of periodic activity in plants, animals and humans. But what does chronobiology have to do with modern medicine? This book presents in a concise but comprehensive fashion the basic principles of chronobiology and their application to clinical medicine. The chapters are written by specialists in the field; they summarize the physiology, pathophysiology and pathology of the human time structure and outline the application of chronobiologic principles and techniques for diagnosis and treatment.
