“Modern Italy”may sound like an oxymoron. For Western civilization,Italian culture represents the classical past and the continuity of canonical tradition,while modernity is understood in contrary terms of rupture and rapid innovation. Charting the evolution of a culture renowned for its historical past into the 10 modern era challenges our understanding of both the resilience of tradition and the elasticity of modernity. The learning of history is always a complex task,one that in the Italian environment is complicated by the changes wrought everywhere over the past 250 years. Culture on the peninsula continues to evolve with characteristic vibrancy. Italy is not a museum. To think of it as such—as a disorganized yet phenomenally rich museum unchanging in its exhibits—is to misunderstand the nature of the Italian cultural condition and the writing of history itself.

L’Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica presenta una collezione di oltre cento opere grafiche di architetti contemporanei (matrici incise all’acquaforte, stampe, bozzetti), quale frutto della seconda edizione del progetto Architettura Incisa. Sostenuto dalla Direzione Generale per il Paesaggio, le Belle Arti, l’Architettura e l’Arte contemporanee del Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali, il progetto, attraverso incontri scientifici, laboratori e mostra, riprende e attualizza antiche modalità di presentazione dell’architettura, sull’esempio dei grandi architetti-incisori del Settecento presenti nelle collezioni dell’Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica. Agli architetti dell’era globale e del disegno informatico viene proposto un impegnativo percorso a ritroso, attraverso tecniche antiche e procedimenti rituali che impongono il recupero della manualità e del gesto che traccia il segno: sulla carta, poi sul rame, inciso all’acquaforte e a punta secca. Ma la difficoltà è sfida. Essa consiste in un confronto con se stessi, con la propria volontà espressiva mediata dalla materia e dallo strumento tecnico dell’incisione (Guido Strazza). Ideato e curato da Sandra Suatoni, Direttore della Stamperia dell’Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica, il progetto è pensato per più edizioni ed è rivolto ad architetti di fama internazionale ma anche a studenti delle Facoltà di Architettura. Nell’edizione attuale, assieme ai rinomati Carlo Aymonino, Alessandro Anselmi, Santiago Calatrava, Massimiliano Fuksas, Franco Purini ed altri, compaiono professori universitari e allievi della Facoltà di Architettura e dell’Accademia di Belle Arti di Reggio Calabria. Nei laboratori di progettazione e incisione a Reggio Calabria, docenti e studenti hanno lavorato fianco a fianco sul tema dei Paesaggi frontali, ispirati alla dimensione reale e mitica del territorio calabrese; in un clima di fervore creativo e di scambio di esperienze, hanno condiviso questioni tecniche, pratiche e teoriche dell’arte incisoria, apprezzandone le possibilità espressive e conseguendo significativi risultati. Nella storica Stamperia dell’Istituto romano, alle spalle della Fontana di Trevi, si sono avvicendati i laboratori degli architetti affermati, con il coinvolgimento ampio dei maestri calcografi, ai quali si deve la stampa di tutte le matrici esposte nella mostra di Palazzo Poli. Obiettivo essenziale del progetto non è sancire l’assimilazione dei prodotti grafici degli architetti con quelli artistici, quanto perseguire situazioni di ricerca disciplinare consone all’architettura, nel recupero della plurisecolare tradizione italiana che assegna al disegno il ruolo di fulcro teorico e pratico delle arti visive. Le matrici incise e le stampe donate dagli autori vanno ad arricchire la collezione permanente dell’Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica.

Questo testo indaga il ruolo che la cultura tecnologica occupa, o dovrebbe occupare, nella formazione universitaria, nella ricerca scientifica, nella progettazione e realizzazione dell'architettura. Il percorso intrapreso si pone l'obiettivo di esplorare, in riferimento al settore produttivo edilizio e alla soglia di una riforma didattica, quali contenuti attengono all'insegnamento della Tecnologia dell'architettura e quali sbocchi professionali offrono; cosa significa fare ricerca in un ambito dal nome tanto abusato (la ricerca tecnologica) e chi ne sono gli attori; quali orientamenti si possono prospettare per una riorganizzazione del settore al fine di innalzare il livello di qualità del prodotto edilizio, nella sua accezione morfologica in particolare. Questo scritto, destinato anche a fini didattici, introduce pertanto alla cultura della realizzazione, secondo la quale ogni atto programmatorio e progettuale deve porsi come obiettivo il raggiungimento della realizzazione. Sebbene questo principio possa sembrare scontato, si rileva invece nel settore un divario sempre maggiore tra il momento di definizione “concettuale” e il momento di definizione “materiale”. Tale divario è riscontrabile anche nei settori disciplinari fondanti la preparazione in Architettura, tra i quali dovrebbero essere invece superate le separazioni, al fine di individuare un'unica strada per il progetto, atto centrale del processo e per questo frutto dell'operato di tutti gli attori. Anche l'aspetto della qualità morfologica è strettamente relazionato con la cultura tecnologica dal momento che deriva da un puro atto creativo, dalla ricerca per l'innovazione e dall'organizzazione del processo edilizio. In chiusura, la lettura di alcune opere famose dell'architettura permette di confrontare l'iter delineato con il processo compiuto.
