The advent of H∞-control was a truly remarkable innovation in multivariable theory. It eliminated the classical/modern dichotomy that had been a major source of the long-standing skepticism about the applicability of modern control theory, by amalgamating the "philosophy" of classical design with "computation" based on the state-space problem setting. It enhanced the application by deepening the theory mathematically and logically, not by weakening it as was done by the reformers of modern control theory in the early 1970s. The purpose of this book is to provide a natural theoretical framework that is understandable with little mathematical background. The notion of chain-scattering, well known in classical circuit theory, but new to control theorists, plays a fundamental role in this book. It captures an essential feature of the control systems design, reducing it to a J-lossless factorization, which leads naturally to the idea of H-infinity-control. The J-lossless conjugation, an essentially new notion in linear system theory, then provides a powerful tool for computing this factorization. Thus the chain-scattering representation, the J-lossless factorization, and the J-lossless conjugation are the three key notions that provide the thread of development in this book. The book is completely self contained and requires little mathematical background other than some familiarity with linear algebra. It will be useful to applied mathematicians and practicing engineers in control system design and as a text for a graduate course in H∞-control and its applications.

This book is a collection of 34 papers presented by leading researchers at the International Workshop on Robust Control held in San Antonio, Texas in March 1991. The common theme tying these papers together is the analysis, synthesis, and design of control systems subject to various uncertainties. The papers describe the latest results in parametric understanding, H8 uncertainty, l1 optical control, and Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT). The book is the first to bring together all the diverse points of view addressing the robust control problem and should strongly influence development in the robust control field for years to come. For this reason, control theorists, engineers, and applied mathematicians should consider it a crucial acquisition for their libraries.

This book presents new computational tools for the H? control of distributed parameter systems in which transfer functions are considered as input-output descriptions for the plants to be controlled. The emphasis is on the computation of the controller parameters and reliable implementation. The authors present recent studies showing that the simplified skew-Toeplitz method is applicable to a wide class of systems, supply detailed examples from systems with time delays and various engineering applications, and discuss reliable implementation of the controller, complemented by a software based on MATLAB. Frequency Domain Techniques for H? Control of Distributed Parameter Systems is intended for advanced undergraduate and early graduate students interested in robust control of distributed parameter systems?time delay systems?as well as researchers and engineers working in related fields. It can be used in the following courses: Introduction to Robust Control with Applications to Distributed Parameter Systems and Introduction to Robust Control with Applications to Time Delay Systems.

Classical Control Using H Infinity Methods written by J. William Helton and has been published by SIAM this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-01-01 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This versatile book teaches control system design using H-Infinity techniques that are simple and compatible with classical control, yet powerful enough to quickly allow the solution of physically meaningful problems. The authors begin by teaching how to formulate control system design problems as mathematical optimization problems and then discuss the theory and numerics for these optimization problems. Their approach is simple and direct, and since the book is modular, the parts on theory can be read independently of the design parts and vice versa, allowing readers to enjoy the book on many levels. Until now, there has not been a publication suitable for teaching the topic at the undergraduate level. This book fills that gap by teaching control system design using H^\infty techniques at a level within reach of the typical engineering and mathematics student. It also contains a readable account of recent developments and mathematical connections.

This volume contains a selection of papers in modern operator theory and its applications. Most of them are directly related to lectures presented at the Inter national Workshop on Operator Theory and its Applications held at the University of Groningen (IWOTA-98) in Groningen, the Netherlands, from June 30-July 3, 1998. The workshop was attended by 97 mathematicians-of which 12 were PhD or postdoctoral students-from 19 countries. The program consisted of 19 plenary lectures of 40 minutes and 72 lectures of 30 minutes in 4 parallell sessions. The present volume reflects the wide range and rich variety of topics presented and discussed at the workshop. The papers deal with operator polynomials and analytic operator functions, with spectral problems of (partial) differential oper ators and related operator matrices, with interpolation, completion and extension problems, with commutant lifting and dilation, with Ricatti equations and real ization problems, with scattering theory, with problems from harmonic analysis, and with topics in the theory of reproducing kernel spaces and of spaces with an indefinite metric. All papers underwent the usual refereeing process.

Estimation and Control of Large Scale Networked Systems is the first book that systematically summarizes results on large-scale networked systems. In addition, the book also summarizes the most recent results on structure identification of a networked system, attack identification and prevention. Readers will find the necessary mathematical knowledge for studying large-scale networked systems, as well as a systematic description of the current status of this field, the features of these systems, difficulties in dealing with state estimation and controller design, and major achievements. Numerical examples in chapters provide strong application backgrounds and/or are abstracted from actual engineering problems, such as gene regulation networks and electricity power systems. This book is an ideal resource for researchers in the field of systems and control engineering. - Provides necessary mathematical knowledge for studying large scale networked systems - Introduces new features for filter and control design of networked control systems - Summarizes the most recent results on structural identification of a networked system, attack identification and prevention

The chapters in this volume, and the volume itself, celebrate the life and research of Roberto Tempo, a leader in the study of complex networked systems, their analysis and control under uncertainty, and robust designs. Contributors include authorities on uncertainty in systems, robustness, networked and network systems, social networks, distributed and randomized algorithms, and multi-agent systems—all fields that Roberto Tempo made vital contributions to. Additionally, at least one author of each chapter was a research collaborator of Roberto Tempo’s. This volume is structured in three parts. The first covers robustness and includes topics like time-invariant uncertainties, robust static output feedback design, and the uncertainty quartet. The second part is focused on randomization and probabilistic methods, which covers topics such as compressive sensing, and stochastic optimization. Finally, the third part deals with distributed systems and algorithms, and explores matters involving mathematical sociology, fault diagnoses, and PageRank computation. Each chapter presents exposition, provides new results, and identifies fruitful future directions in research. This book will serve as a valuable reference volume to researchers interested in uncertainty, complexity, robustness, optimization, algorithms, and networked systems.
