In the mid 1980s, the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) inaugurated a series of studies in mathematics education by comm- sioning one on the influence of technology and informatics on mathematics and its teaching. These studies are designed to thoroughly explore topics of c- temporary interest, by gathering together a group of experts who prepare a Study Volume that provides a considered assessment of the current state and a guide to further developments. Studies have embraced a range of issues, some central, such as the teaching of algebra, some closely related, such as the impact of history and psychology, and some looking at mathematics education from a particular perspective, such as cultural differences between East and West. These studies have been commissioned at the rate of about one per year. Once the ICMI Executive decides on the topic, one or two chairs are selected and then, in consultation with them, an International Program Committee (IPC) of about 12 experts is formed. The IPC then meets and prepares a Discussion Document that sets forth the issues and invites interested parties to submit papers. These papers are the basis for invitations to a Study Conference, at which the various dimensions of the topic are explored and a book, the Study Volume, is sketched out. The book is then put together in collaboration, mainly using electronic communication. The entire process typically takes about six years.

This book contains ideas for teachers facing the challenges of turning their classrooms and schools into "discourse communities." The yearbook is divided into four sections. Part 1 (chapters 1-3) sets the stage by considering the challenges inherent in shifting directions of discourse. Part 2 (chapters 4-21) focuses on establishing discourse communities within the classroom. Part 3 (chapters 22-25) moves the discourse discussion outside the K-12 arena. Finally, Part 4 (chapters 26-28) focuses on the role of language in mathematics discourse. Chapters include: (1) "Communication--An Imperative for Change: A Conversation with Mary Lindquist" (M. M. Lindquist & P. C. Elliott); (2) "Diverse Communications" (D. Pimm); (3) "Building Discourse Communities in Mathematics Classrooms: A Worthwhile but Challenging Journey" (E. A. Silver & M. S. Innovative Teaching: Best Practices from Business and Beyond for Mathematics Teachers provides educators with new and exciting ways to introduce material and methods to motivate and engage students by showing how some of the techniques commonly used in the business world — and beyond — are applicable to the world of education. It also offers educators practical advice with regard to the changing culture of education, keeping up with technology, navigating politics at work, interacting with colleagues, developing leadership skills, group behavior, and gender differences.Innovative Teaching demonstrates how the classroom environment is similar to the marketplace. Educators, like businesses, for example, must capture and hold the attention of their audience while competing with a constant stream of 'noise.' With the introduction of the Internet and the wide use of social media, promoters understand that they must not only engage their audience, but also incorporate audience feedback into the promotional work and product or service they offer. Innovative Teaching shows educators how to take the best practices from business — and beyond — and recombine these resources for appropriate use in the classroom.

English language learners share a basic need—to engage, and be engaged, in meaningful mathematics. Through guiding principles and instructional tools, together with classroom vignettes and video clips, this book shows how to go beyond good teaching to support ELLs in learning challenging mathematics while developing language skill. Position your students to share the valuable knowledge that they bring to the classroom as they actively build and communicate their understanding. The design of this book is interactive and requires the reader to move back and forth between the chapters and online resources at www.nctm.org/more4u. Occasionally, the reader is asked to stop and reflect before reading further in a chapter. At other times, the reader is asked to view video clips of teaching practices for ELLs or to refer to graphic organizers, observation and analysis protocols, links to resources, and other supplementary materials. The authors encourage the reader to use this resource in professional development.

"The list of math books to truly synthesize what we know so far and what we need to know is a very short and exclusive list. Well, you can confidently add Mathematize It to this collection. Written by three of the most respected math educators today, the book zeros in on that often poorly traveled journey between the question and answer in problem solving. Mathematize It will be your go-to resource to install the mathematical play revolution in elementary classes everywhere!" Suni Singh Author of Pi of Life: the Hidden Happiness of Mathematics and Math Recess: Playful Learning in an Age of Disruption Help students reveal the math behind the words "I don’t get what I’m supposed to do!" This is a common refrain from students when asked to solve word problems. Solving problems is about more than computation. Students must understand the mathematics of a situation to know what computation will lead to an appropriate solution. Many students often pluck numbers from the problem and plug them into an equation using the first operation they can think of (or the last one they practiced). Students also tend to choose an operation by solely relying on key words that they believe will help them arrive at an answer, which without careful consideration of what the problem is actually asking of them. Mathematize It! Going Beyond Key Words to Make Sense of Word Problems, Grades 3-5 shares a reasoning approach that helps students dig into the problem to uncover the underlying mathematics, deeply consider the problem’s context, and employ strong operation sense to solve it. Through the process of mathematizing, the authors provide an explanation of a consistent method—and specific instructional strategies—to take the initial focus off specific numbers and computations and put it on the actions and relationships expressed in the problem. Sure to enhance teachers’ own operation sense, this user-friendly resource for Grades 3–5 • Offers a systematic mathematizing process for students to use when solving word problems • Gives practice opportunities and dozens of problems to leverage in the classroom • Provides specific examples of questions and explorations for all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals • Demonstrates the use of concrete manipulatives to model problems with dozens of short videos • Includes end-of-chapter activities and reflection questions How can you help your students understand what is happening mathematically when solving word problems? Based on the author’s experience as a researcher and teacher of lower-track students, Beyond Formulas in Mathematics and Teaching illuminates the complex dynamics of the algebra classroom. From within this setting, Daniel Chazan thoughtfully explores topics that concern all dedicated educators, how to really know one’s students, how to find engaging material, and how to inspire meaningful classroom conversations. Throughout, he addresses the predicaments that are central to the lives of teachers who work in standard educational settings. By highlighting teaching dilemmas, Chazan prompts readers to consider what their own responses would be in similar situations. With an eye to ways of restructuring roles and relationships, Beyond Formulas in Mathematics and Teaching is essential reading for educators seeking to enhance their teaching practices and understanding of students who may be estranged from school.
