Es ist in aller Munde! Woher kommt es? „Lean“ ist seit dem Ende der 80er Jahre, als das Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in einer Studie das bei der Toyota Motor Company entwickelte Produktionssystem (TPS) analysierte, ein Begriff geworden (vgl. Wittenstein u.a. 2006, 11). Dabei wurde zu Tage gefördert, dass japanische Automobilhersteller effizienter, qualitativ hochwertiger und deutlich flexibler als die Konkurrenten in Europa und den USA waren. Im Kern beschäftigte sich die MIT-Studie zunächst mit dem Vergleich von unterschiedlichen Montagewerken der Automobilhersteller, weshalb von Lean-Production gesprochen wurde. Erst in einem weiteren Schritt wurde der Lean-Gedanke auf vor- sowie nachgelagerte Bereiche der Produktion ausgeweitet. Die Entwicklung der Managementphilosophie des Lean-Managements ging somit von der Produktion aus. Nach den Erfolgen des Lean-Managements in der Produktion und dem härter werdenden weltweiten Wettbewerb geschuldet, ist es nur selbstverständlich, dass dieses Lean-Thinking nicht vor dem administrativen Bereich Halt macht und sich von den Produktionshallen in die Büros vorarbeitet (vgl. Wittenstein u.a. 2006, 9). Innerhalb des Lean-Managements, als Oberbegriff für alle Anstrengungen, profitabler, qualitativ besser, schneller und flexibler zu werden, kann Lean-Production aus jahrzehntelanger Erfahrung schöpfen. Lean-Office, als Pendant dazu im Büro bzw. im administrativen Bereich, ist eine relativ neue Herausforderung, derer sich die Unternehmen erst seit der Jahrtausendwende vermehrt annehmen. Ziel dieser Abhandlung ist es herauszuarbeiten, wo die Schwierigkeiten bei der Übertragung des Lean-Gedanken auf die Verwaltung liegen, und diese, soweit es möglich ist, zu erkennen, sowie Lösungen dafür zu bieten.
