Abstract: As a result of a CERN market survey, CMOS sensors in pixel and strip geometries were developed. The CMOS process is an established commercial industry process, which a lot of foundries utilize to produce silicon type devices. Typical CMOS foundries are equipped for bulk productions, but only for sensors much smaller than what is needed in e.g. the strip region of the ATLAS Inner Tracker. To produce large enough sensors, the process of stitching is utilized. The sensor structure is divided up into different regions, which individual wafer masks can imprint side by side onto the wafer to form a coherent area. With this method, the sensors can be nearly wafer-sized. The effects of stitching on charge collection, electric field strength and configuration, detection efficiency and radiation hardness have to be investigated. The sensors discussed in this talk are stitched passive CMOS strip sensors produced by LFoundry in a 150 nm process with three different strip designs. The results of electrical IV characterisations, TCT and 90Sr-source measurements and the effects of radiation damages are discussed. The effects of the stitches on the sensors performance were also investigated. The results of these measurements demonstrate that the stitching process works and introduces no negative effects on the sensors performance, before and after irradiation

Position-sensitive silicon detectors have been used in particle physics experiments for more than 40 years. Technological advances have made it possible to build large-area silicon trackers with millions of channels. Double-sided silicon microstrip detectors have been selected as the sensor technology for the Silicon Tracking System (STS) of the Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR). The goal of the CBM experiment is to investigate the properties of strongly interacting matter at high baryon density in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The challenge is to perform measurements at interaction rates of up to 10 MHz. This will give access to extremely rare observables such as multi-strange hyperons or hadrons with charm quarks. Up to 700 particles per collision are expected within detector acceptance. Their tracks and thus their momentum are measured in the STS with high resolution. The STS consists of 876 microstrip sensors with a total area of about 4 m^2. Each sensor has 1024 strips per side, resulting in a total of about 1.8e6 channels. To ensure high-precision measurement, the STS must use high-quality microstrip sensors. The fraction of defective strips should not exceed 1.5% per sensor. The sensors must also meet CBM specifications for the electrical parameters. The work presented in this thesis focuses on the quality assurance of microstrip sensors. For this purpose, a highly automated probe station was designed and built at the University of Tubingen. The methods for determining the electrical characteristics of microstrip sensors were developed. This made it possible to investigate the prototype sensors for STS in detail. The results and challenges are discussed in detail. Suggestions are provided that can help improve sensor design. As a result of the conducted quality assurance, the acceptance criteria for CBM microstrip sensors at the series production stage were defined. The developed quality control methods made it possible to reliably identify defective strips. This allows for the selection of high-quality sensors for the construction of the STS and ensures high data quality during the operation of the CBM experiment.
