In view of the very heavy CBM experiment constraints on the first level trigger, no conventional trigger is obviously applicable. Hence a fast trigger algorithm with the goal of realization in reconfigurable hardware had to be developed to fulfil all requirements of the experiment. In this connection the general Hough transform, which is already utilized in several other experiments, is used as a basis. This approach constitutes further a global method for tracking, which transforms all particle interaction points with the detector stations by means of a defined formula into a parameter space corresponding to the momentum of the particle tracks. This formula is of course developed especially for the given environment of CBM and defines thus the core of the applied three dimensional Hough transform. As the main focus of attention is furthermore on the realization of the needed data throughput, the necessary complex formula calculations give reason to outsource predefined formula results in look-up tables. This circumstance offers then collaterally the possibility to utilize any other sufficiently precise method like Runge-Kutta of fourth order for example to compute these look-up tables, because this computation can be evidently done offline without any effect on the Hough transform's processing speed. For algorithm simulation purposes the CBMROOT framework provides the module htrack', which is written in the programming language C++. This module includes many analyses for the determination of algorithm parameters, which can be even executed automatically to some extent. In addition to this, there are of course also analyses for the measurement of the algorithm's quality as well as for the individual rating of each partial step of the algorithm. Consequently the milestone of a customizable level one tracking algorithm, which can be used without any specific knowledge, is now obtained. Besides this, the investigated concepts are explicitly considered in the implement

This exhaustive survey is the result of a four year effort by many leading researchers in the field to produce both a readable introduction and a yardstick for the many upcoming experiments using heavy ion collisions to examine the properties of nuclear matter. The books falls naturally into five large parts, first examining the bulk properties of strongly interacting matter, including its equation of state and phase structure. Part II discusses elementary hadronic excitations of nuclear matter, Part III addresses the concepts and models regarding the space-time dynamics of nuclear collision experiments, Part IV collects the observables from past and current high-energy heavy-ion facilities in the context of the theoretical predictions specific to compressed baryonic matter. Part V finally gives a brief description of the experimental concepts. The book explicitly addresses everyone working or planning to enter the field of high-energy nuclear physics.

This open access book is a comprehensive review of the methods and algorithms that are used in the reconstruction of events recorded by past, running and planned experiments at particle accelerators such as the LHC, SuperKEKB and FAIR. The main topics are pattern recognition for track and vertex finding, solving the equations of motion by analytical or numerical methods, treatment of material effects such as multiple Coulomb scattering and energy loss, and the estimation of track and vertex parameters by statistical algorithms. The material covers both established methods and recent developments in these fields and illustrates them by outlining exemplary solutions developed by selected experiments. The clear presentation enables readers to easily implement the material in a high-level programming language. It also highlights software solutions that are in the public domain whenever possible. It is a valuable resource for PhD students and researchers working on online or offline reconstruction for their experiments.

Position-sensitive silicon detectors have been used in particle physics experiments for more than 40 years. Technological advances have made it possible to build large-area silicon trackers with millions of channels. Double-sided silicon microstrip detectors have been selected as the sensor technology for the Silicon Tracking System (STS) of the Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR). The goal of the CBM experiment is to investigate the properties of strongly interacting matter at high baryon density in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The challenge is to perform measurements at interaction rates of up to 10 MHz. This will give access to extremely rare observables such as multi-strange hyperons or hadrons with charm quarks. Up to 700 particles per collision are expected within detector acceptance. Their tracks and thus their momentum are measured in the STS with high resolution. The STS consists of 876 microstrip sensors with a total area of about 4 m^2. Each sensor has 1024 strips per side, resulting in a total of about 1.8e6 channels. To ensure high-precision measurement, the STS must use high-quality microstrip sensors. The fraction of defective strips should not exceed 1.5% per sensor. The sensors must also meet CBM specifications for the electrical parameters. The work presented in this thesis focuses on the quality assurance of microstrip sensors. For this purpose, a highly automated probe station was designed and built at the University of Tubingen. The methods for determining the electrical characteristics of microstrip sensors were developed. This made it possible to investigate the prototype sensors for STS in detail. The results and challenges are discussed in detail. Suggestions are provided that can help improve sensor design. As a result of the conducted quality assurance, the acceptance criteria for CBM microstrip sensors at the series production stage were defined. The developed quality control methods made it possible to reliably identify defective strips. This allows for the selection of high-quality sensors for the construction of the STS and ensures high data quality during the operation of the CBM experiment.
