Glassy states are commonly observed across metallic, organic, and ceramic materials. They exhibit unique mechanical, thermal, and electronic properties. Metallic glasses are stronger than regular metals while being as pliable as plastics, but their wide-spread technological adoption is hindered by our poor understanding of their atomic ordering. Organic glasses have applications ranging from electronics to pharmaceuticals. Glasses lack long-range order, and their properties are mediated by nano-scale ordering. Experimental characterization of glassy structures is incredibly challenging due to the awesome complexity of their nanostructures and a lack of characterization techniques that can probe the local ordering and structural relaxation processes with nanometer-scale spatial resolution. Characterization techniques based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) probe the structure and dynamics of such systems with nanometer-scale spatial resolution. Structural studies on metallic and organic glasses using 4-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D STEM) reveal varying length scales of ordering in these systems and their impact on physical properties, at unprecedented spatial resolution. Electron correlation microscopy (ECM) analysis on time-resolved in situ thermal annealed TEM data lets us study glassy dynamics and reveals spatially heterogeneous dynamics in the bulk and at the surface of metallic glass nanowires. The techniques developed, and the mechanisms of structural ordering and relaxation dynamics revealed in these investigations, have implications on the synthesis, processing, and characterization of glassy systems with controlled thermal, electronic and mechanical properties, including growth of ultrastable metallic glass phases and molecular glasses with tunable structural anisotropy for organic electronics applications, fabrication of glassy nanostructures by superplastic forming, and control of surface crystallization.

Scanning transmission electron microscopy has become a mainstream technique for imaging and analysis at atomic resolution and sensitivity, and the authors of this book are widely credited with bringing the field to its present popularity. Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy(STEM): Imaging and Analysis will provide a comprehensive explanation of the theory and practice of STEM from introductory to advanced levels, covering the instrument, image formation and scattering theory, and definition and measurement of resolution for both imaging and analysis. The authors will present examples of the use of combined imaging and spectroscopy for solving materials problems in a variety of fields, including condensed matter physics, materials science, catalysis, biology, and nanoscience. Therefore this will be a comprehensive reference for those working in applied fields wishing to use the technique, for graduate students learning microscopy for the first time, and for specialists in other fields of microscopy.

Coupling the development of emerging experimental techniques in STEM and EELS with a fundamental understanding of atomic electronic structure afforded by DFT represents the unique approach and intention of this thesis. Scanning transmission electron microscopes equipped with high-angle annular dark field (HAADF) detectors and Gatan image filters (GIF) provide images and spectra, where the image brightness is interpreted as a function of atomic mass and thickness, and elemental specific spectra provide a means for the exploration of electronic and chemical structure of materials at the angstrom size scale. Over the past 20 years, the application of EELS in STEM has enabled more accurate elemental identification and exploration of electronic and chemical structure on angstrom-length scales, and arguably has provided an unprecedented wealth of materials characterization compared to other available techniques. Many materials issues related to specific novel properties that cannot be analyzed using the traditional techniques of the past, however, still remain unanswered. These concepts require a married approach of experiment and theory to fully explain. The intent of this dissertation is the development of improved analysis techniques that derive quantitative atomic scale information in connection with unraveling the origins of materials properties linked to the electronic structure and chemistry of materials.

A brief historical account of the background leading to the publication of the first four editions of the World Directory of Crystallographers was presented by G. Boom in his preface to the Fourth Edition, published late in 1971. That edition was produced by traditional typesetting methods from compilations of biographical data prepared by national Sub-Editors. The major effort required to produce a directory by manual methods provided the impetus to use computer techniques for the Fifth Edition. The account of the production of the first computer assisted Directory was described by S.C. Abrahams in the preface of the Fifth Edition. Computer composition, which required a machine readable data base, offered several major advantages. The choice of typeface and range of characters was flexible. Corrections and additions to the data base were rapid and, once established, it was hoped updating for future editions would be simple and inexpensive. The data base was put to other Union uses, such as preparation of mailing labels and formulation of lists of crystallographers with specified common fields of interest. The Fifth Edition of the World Directory of Crystallographers was published in June of 1977, the Sixth in May of 1981. The Subject Indexes for the Fifth and Sixth Editions were printed in 1978 and 1981 respectively, both having a limited distribution.
