The last 20 years of health care have seen many changes relating to technology and health care policy, which have expanded the need for charge nurses to take on an extensive leadership role. The charge nurse has the ability to influence patient safety, health care policy and practices, and nursing staff retention. To provide adequate training that prepares charge nurses to effectively fulfill these responsibilities, new training resources, such as those made available online, are needed that provide the flexibility for charge nurses who often face time constraints and increased census at facilities. Adjusting the charge nurse course from strictly face-to-face to a blended format, incorporating online tools, enabled charge nurse attendees to utilize Kolb's experiential learning process to further build their leadership practices. The use of a blended approach supports the integration of knowledge from the theory level with the clinical practice level. This feasibility study translated the current literature in an attempt to show the benefit of the blended format and the nursing education departments desire to change the delivery style of the nursing education courses. The results of the project, conducted at a northeastern hospital, found no statistical difference between the face-to-face and blended delivery methods. The overall goal is to enhance the hospital's nursing education department's future training through the effective use of blended learning.

Emergency Departments provide critical healthcare services to millions of people each year. Charge nurses are frequently responsible for managing day-to-day operations of these complex, high-risk environments. Charge nurses significantly impact patient outcomes, department throughput, and staff satisfaction. Yet, current standards for educating and preparing nurses to take on the charge nurse role are inconsistent and inadequate. The purpose of this project was to develop a toolkit to guide educators in developing charge nurse education/ leadership programs for the emergency department. Toolkit topics included role of the charge nurse, leadership, skills development, and understanding different parts of the organization. Each section included goals, learning objectives, instructional activities, and resources. Establishing consistent and robust charge nurse education programs will result in confident, well-prepared charge nurses. This will not only improve day-to-day operations but also safety and quality of care delivered to millions of people.

Literature suggests there is a link between nursing leadership training and decreases in patient mortality, medication errors, restraint use, patient falls with injury, and hospital acquired infections. In an effort to prepare charge nurses (CNs) tasked with leading unit based initiatives to improve patient safety, 24 competencies were identified and categorized based on the five domains as identified by the American Organization of Nurse Executive (AONE). The purpose of the evidence-based project was to determine if a three-day leadership training-program increased CN competency as measured by the pre and post-test survey. The adoption of a formalized CN program at the project site was based on evidence from similar programs implemented within the past five years. Using nursing education as the intervention, the scores for Business Skills, Communication, and Professionalism competencies increased significantly from pretest to post test (p

This integrative review focuses on the current body of evidence for charge nurse leadership development (CNLD). It identifies common skills and competencies, provides a synthesis of existing training practices, and identifies gaps in the evidence. A thorough literature search of electronic databases and reference lists was completed, resulting in the identification of 22 studies published between 2011 and 2020. Data from the selected studies were evaluated and categorized into common themes; virtually all reported positive outcomes for the charge nurse development program implemented. Two of the studies reviewed were integrative reviews that compared identified themes and methodologies. Four studies were qualitative, identifying needed charge nurse competencies. Fifteen studies were quantitative, evaluating the effectiveness of charge nurse professional development programs implemented in the health care organization. One correlational study compared face-to-face learning with a blended learning format of face-to-face and online learning. Four major themes were identified: management of daily clinical operations, mentoring and empowering of staff, communication and conflict resolution skills, and role clarity and self-confidence. Two minor themes, budgetary knowledge and customer relations associated with patient/family-centered care, were identified. The majority of the charge nurse professional development programs were offered using multiple educational formats. Research supports the importance of a formal charge nurse professional development program to strengthen charge nurse role development and promote sustainable organizational goals and optimal patient outcomes.
