The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), established in 1974, is designed to protect the quality of drinking water in the United States. Congress amended the SDWA in 1996 to address the current source water problems and assist the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), state agencies, and local water utilities to plan for future drinking water quality challenges and assure the sustainable resource of safe drinking water. Specifically, Section 1453 of the 1996 SDWA amendments requires all states to establish Source Water Assessment Programs (SWAPs). This includes the submission of a plan to the USEPA detailing how the states will delineate source water assessment areas, inventory significant contaminants in these areas, and determine the susceptibility of each public water supply to contamination. ... The collection of existing data on chemical occurrence is one tool to help determine potential contaminants and perform susceptibility analyses for surface and groundwater. As a result, the American Water Works Association Research Foundation (AwwaRF) funded this research project to identify, list, and characterize chemical occurrence databases and data sets that can be used by states and utilities to perform source water assessments.

Comprehensive Water Quality and Purification, Four Volume Set provides a rich source of methods for analyzing water to assure its safety from natural and deliberate contaminants, including those that are added because of carelessness of human endeavors. Human development has great impact on water quality, and new contaminants are emerging every day. The issues of sampling for water analysis, regulatory considerations, and forensics in water quality and purity investigations are covered in detail. Microbial as well as chemical contaminations from inorganic compounds, radionuclides, volatile and semivolatile compounds, disinfectants, herbicides, and pharmaceuticals, including endocrine disruptors, are treated extensively. Researchers must be aware of all sources of contamination and know how to prescribe techniques for removing them from our water supply. Unlike other works published to date that concentrate on issues of water supply, water resource management, hydrology, and water use by industry, this work is more tightly focused on the monitoring and improvement of the quality of existing water supplies and the recovery of wastewater via new and standard separation techniques Using analytical chemistry methods, offers remediation advice on pollutants and contaminants in addition to providing the critical identification perspective The players in the global boom of water purification are numerous and varied. Having worked extensively in academia and industry, the Editor-in-Chief has been careful about constructing a work for a shared audience and cause

Volume 1 outlines water supply infrastructure. The requirements for supplying water to a home, a city or a factory can be very different. Experts in these fields explain the nuances of the details involved in maintaining adequate quantity and quality for these different consumers. Waste water management can be of even greater concern, yet its management can follow similar paths when compared to sophisticated water supply treatment. Both the physics and chemistry of these fields are fully covered. Volume 2 deals with the big picture of regional water supplies, how they become contaminated, how they can be protected and how they can best serve the surrounding populations and industries. Significant focus is placed upon the natural chemistry of available water supplies and its biological impacts. Case studies from regions around the world offer an excellent picture of the world's water resources.

Available online: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2023-508/ This is a timely revision and update of the Nordic report on existing default values and recommendation for exposure assessments, from 2011. The report aims to give an updated overview of non-chemical-specific exposure factors to be used by the authorities during the process of assessing exposure to both adults and children, especially in risk assessment in relation to REACH. This contributes towards a further harmonization of such exposure factors to be used in exposure assessments. In the report the recommended values for the non-chemical specific exposure factors are represented. The focus of this report is to be used in the context of REACH, however, the recommended values can also be used in the broader context of chemical regulations.

The provision of safe drinking water has been an important factor in the improvement of the health status of U.S. communities since the turn of the last century. Nonetheless, outbreaks of waterborne disease and incidences of chemical contamination of drinking water continue to occur. Setting Priorities for Drinking Water Contaminants recommends a new process for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to use in deciding which potential drinking water contaminants should be regulated in public water supplies to provide the greatest protection against waterborne illnesses. The book covers chemical and microbiological contaminants and includes a historical review of past approaches to setting priorities for drinking water contaminants and other environmental pollutants. It emphasizes the need for expert judgment in this process and for a conservative approach that considers public health protection as the first priority.
