As I look back at the 1950s and early '60s I realize now that what seemed like a depression to me, truly was a blessing in disguise. I honestly believe that if today's children had a little taste of the past we would all be better off in many, many ways. I thank God that I was born and raised in Eastern Kentucky and I will be an old head-of-the-holler Kentuckian until the day I die. - James A. Adkins

Longlisted for the National Book Award An extraordinary and unforgettable short story collection about community, home, betrayal, and forgiveness—from a writer whose “spellbinding, buoyant”* storytelling will break your heart as it tends to the wounds. *Texas Monthly In Holler, Child’s eleven brilliant stories, LaToya Watkins presses at the bruises of guilt, love, and circumstance. Each story introduces us to a character irrevocably shaped by place and reaching toward something—hope, reconciliation, freedom. In “Cutting Horse,” the appearance of a horse in a man’s suburban backyard places a former horse breeder in trouble with the police. In “Holler, Child,” a mother is forced into an impossible position when her son gets in a kind of trouble she knows too well from the other side. And “Time After” shows us the unshakable bonds of family as a sister journeys to find her estranged brother—the one who saved her many times over. Throughout Holler, Child, we see love lost and gained, and grief turned to hope. Much like LaToya Watkins’s acclaimed debut novel, Perish, this collection peers deeply into lives of women and men experiencing intimate and magnificent reckonings—exploring how race, power, and inequality map on the individual, and demonstrating the mythic proportions of everyday life.

* "This is a masterpiece of middle grade fiction, at once summoning the timelessness of life in rural America while blending in modern elements."--School Library Journal, starred review The poignant--and funny--story of a girl trying to be brave and find her place in the world after she's sent to live with scheming relatives. Right before Wavie's mother died, she gave Wavie a list of instructions to help her find her way in life, including this one: Be brave, Wavie B! Now Wavie's back in the Holler--and in the clutches of her Aunt Samantha Rose. In Hillbilly Holler, Teri Darnell tells deeply personal stories of how her family survived despite social and cultural differences coupled with a father who was mentally ill and violent. The Darnell story begins with her ancestor's life on the family farm with a woman chasing grandfather who was murdered on a river boat, to her parents finding aspiration after the Korean War. Teri's parents migrated to Cleveland from rural Appalachia to chase the American dream of prosperity. The stories unfold as Teri's dad struggles with bi polar, PTSD, alcoholism, poverty, trauma, and domestic violence. One job leads to another as they move from the city to the country, back to Appalachia, then into the city again. Ultimately, Teri struggled through her fear of failure to be the first in her family to go to college at night in the Air Force to achieve a Bachelor's degree in Business Management. She went on to earn a Master's degree in Business Administration while attending night school and working sixty hours a week at a fortune 50 company. She recently retired to pursue her passion in photography.A deeply personal memoir, Hillbilly Holler is the story of how grit and grind can lead to upward mobility. Urban Appalachians are usually not rich and famous. They are the men and women who worked in the factories or hauled fuel across America to keep the economy alive. Many longed for going home to Appalachia as their children and grandchildren grew up in the city, towns, or the suburbs. The Urban Appalachians helped shape the life and culture of American cities in the last half of this century.

Newbery and Carnegie Medal-winning author Sharon Creech's stories become instant classics, beloved for their genuine characters and celebration of classic themes such as the gifts of love, family, and forgiveness. This quartet collects four of her bestselling novels, including the Newbery Medal-winning Walk Two Moons. Walk Two Moons: In this Newbery-winning novel, thirteen-year-old Salamanca Tree Hiddle, proud of her country roots and the "Indian-ness in her blood," travels from Ohio to Idaho with her eccentric grandparents. Along the way, she tells them of the story of Phoebe Winterbottom, who received mysterious messages, who met a "potential lunatic," and whose mother disappeared. As Sal entertains her grandparents with Phoebe's outrageous story, her own story begins to unfold—the story of a girl whose only wish is to be reunited with her missing mother. Ruby Holler: "Trouble twins" Dallas and Florida are orphans who have given up believing there is such a thing as a loving home. Tiller and Sairy are an eccentric older couple who live in the beautiful, mysterious Ruby Holler, but they're restless for one more big adventure. When they invite the twins to join them on their journeys, they first must all stay together in the Holler, and the magic of the place takes over. The Great Unexpected: Young Naomi Deane is brimming with curiosity and her best friend, Lizzie Scatterding, could talk the ears off a cornfield. Naomi has a knack for being around when trouble happens. She knows all the peculiar people in town—like Crazy Cora and Witch Wiggins. But then, one day, a boy drops out of a tree. Just like that. A strangely charming Finn boy. And then the Dingle Dangle man appears, asking all kinds of questions. Curious surprises are revealed—three locked trunks, a pair of rooks, a crooked bridge, and that boy—and soon Naomi and Lizzie find their lives changed forever. The Boy on the Porch: When a young couple finds a boy asleep on their porch, their lives take a surprising turn. Unable to speak, the boy Jacob can't explain his history. All John and Marta know is that they have been chosen to care for him. And, as their connection and friendship with Jacob grow, they embrace his exuberant spirit and talents. The three of them blossom into an unlikely family and begin to see the world in brand-new ways.
