A story to read, enjoy, and ponder: for the enjoyment of a story, the facts of history, and truths of living. “We be a’needing’ better government in this area.” The words still rang in Lige’s ears as he turned his mule and headed up the holler. Chick Allen had just told him the constable had sent word for them to, “Cut the ropes and let Rosco loose. That they weren’t aiming to carry him halfway across the state.” Why, they had had Rosco tied up and ready for the law to pack off, and they wouldn’t do a thing. Seven months later Lige was summonsed to court over to Jackson, fifty miles away, because of the murder case. It was paining Lige to leave Clarie with the six children and it being planting time. At best, it would be five days for going out and back, and a day for court. To top it off, Lige knew there was trouble brewing in their home. What was a man to do? The reader is allowed to feel the day to day conflicts and rewards of mother and homemaker Clarie, the strength and challenges of Lige, as citizen, husband and father, and what it is like growing up at the turn of the century – especially in the eyes of nine-year-old Sprout. For reasons of her own, Clarie has never whipped this son and his ill-behavior is a sore spot with siblings. Clarie tries to avoid looking squarely at the outcome of her child, though incident after incident alarm her. Gently the father awakens Clarie to the God-given task of training Sprout (like the others) to be a man of worth. Highly historical, the story deals with the need of government in the back woods, challenges of raising a family, and the intrusion of the outsiders. The book will captivate readers of all ages as they follow the Pratt family who live ‘at the head of the holler’.

As I look back at the 1950s and early '60s I realize now that what seemed like a depression to me, truly was a blessing in disguise. I honestly believe that if today's children had a little taste of the past we would all be better off in many, many ways. I thank God that I was born and raised in Eastern Kentucky and I will be an old head-of-the-holler Kentuckian until the day I die. - James A. Adkins

Queer linguistics – in its position as both a linguistic science of and for queer folk – is inherently agitating to the disciplinary anxiety of a general linguistic science. It represents, as all queer science does, a disruption of the normative modes of knowledge production and a displacement of academic authority. This collection reconsiders the placement of the queer subject, both as the researcher and as the researched, within and beyond the discipline and provides an intellectual space for the interdisciplinary (and sometimes anti-disciplinary) linguistic science of gender and sexuality. In three sections, it respectively considers the development of hyper-speciated queer linguistic subfields, the interdisciplinarity of intersectional approaches to queer language, and the institution of queer linguistic science both within and beyond the academy. Taken together, the essays in this collection confront the scientific and institutional discipline of linguistics from a queer vantage point, one which is perhaps inherently interdisciplinary in its formulation.
