Excerpt from Children of the Market Place They pronounced me a fine boy. I was round faced, round bodied, well nourished. The nurse read my horoscope in coffee grounds. I was to become a notable figure in the world. My mother's people took me in charge, glad to give me a place in their household. Here I was when my father returned from the war, six months later. He had been wounded in the battle of Waterloo. He was still weak and ill. I was told these things by my grandmother in the succeeding years. Edgar Lee Masters (1868-1950) was an American attorney, poet, biographer, and dramatist. He is the author of Spoon River Anthology, The New Star Chamber and Other Essays, Songs and Satires, The Great Valley, The Serpent in the Wilderness, An Obscure Tale, The Spleen, Mark Twain: A Portrait, Lincoln: The Man, and Illinois Poems. In all, Masters published twelve plays, twenty-one books of poetry, six novels and six biographies, including those of Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain, Vachel Lindsay, and Walt Whitman. The culture around Lewistown, in addition to the town's cemetery at Oak Hill, and the nearby Spoon River were the inspirations for many of his works, most notably Spoon River Anthology, his most famous and acclaimed work. It gained a huge popularity, but shattered his position as a respectable member of establishment.

"CHILDREN of the Market Place" is not primarily a story of slavery or a study of the negro problem. But it is a broad picture of an America, a mid-centry America, which lived and moved, North and South alike, in the negro question. Even in its portraiture of Stephen A. Douglas, the book deals perforce with the dilemma of the black man in a white man's country. Douglas would take no uncompromising moral ground with regard to the ethics of slavery, but sought and vehemently advocated a settlement of the question on the basis of States' rights. The times exacted at least the appearance of an ethical decision: hence the pleader for a political decision was to fall between two stools. Like Mr. Quick in "Vandemark's Folly," Mr. Masters casts his historical narrative in the third person. The supposed story-teller comes of "good people" in England. He is at Oxford when news comes of his father's death in America. He is eighteen, the year is 1833. His father has been among the Illinois pioneers, and leaves much land there. But this property is the fruit less of his own industry and enterprise than of a bargain made with a white man, whose octoroon daughter he has married for a price. His own daughter Zoe, something less than an octoroon, is still technically black, and his property therefore goes to his son. The son takes a magnanimous attitude towards his half-sister; but nothing can bridge the gap between them or protect her from her fate as chattel of the American white man. That under another name and in a foreign soil she wins place as a great singer, is among the ironic chances of her blood. . . In this book, after all, the problem of the negro in America is only part of the general problem of liberty and equality as time has sought to work it outsought but not as yet succeeded.

The purpose of this study is to identify and develop appreciation for the theme of the reversal of weeping in Luke’s gospel. Lukan scholarship has not fully recognized the reversal of weeping as a distinctive theme. By understanding Luke’s third beatitude (6:21b) and third woe (6:25b) as two pegs on which the theme of the reversal of weeping is hung, it proposes that the reversal of weeping is a distinctive theme in Luke. In doing so, Luke repetitively uses κλαίω to highlight the theme. This technique of Leitwort leads readers to focus on the reversal of weeping more effectively. Luke’s presentation of the reversal of weeping is not limited to identifying it as a distinctive theme. There are narrative intentions and theological implications that Luke also targets. First, Luke wants to demonstrate concern for marginalized groups in society. He also shows how their fortunes are reversed by Jesus. Second, Luke portrays Jesus as the promised prophet, describing him as like Elijah and Jeremiah, but superior to them. Finally, Luke provides the reversal of weeping as a significant phenomenon of the kingdom of God, particularly to show that the presence of God’s kingdom is inaugurated and realized in Jesus Christ.

Challenging the popular perception that the free market can objectively ameliorate inequality and markedly improve student academic achievement, this book examines the overly positivistic rhetoric surrounding charter schools. Taking a multifocal approach, this book examines how charter schools reproduce inequality in public education. By linking charter schools to broader social issues and political economic factors, such as neoliberalism, race, and class, The Charter School Solution presents a more complete and nuanced assessment of charter schools in the context of the American public education system.

Childhood and children's culture are regularly in the forefront of debates about how society is changing - often, it is argued, for the worse. Some of the most visible changes are new media technology; digital television; the internet; portable entertainment systems such as games, mobile phones, i-pods and so on. Television, the most popular medium with children for the last thirty years, is becoming less so. This book is intended to broaden the public debate about the role of popular media in children's lives. Its definition of 'media' is wide-ranging: not just television and the internet, but also still-popular forms such as fairy tales, children's literature - including the triumphantly successful Harry Potter series - and playground games. It sets these discussions within a framework of historical, sociological and psychological approaches to the study of children and childhood. At times of rapid technological change, public anxieties always arise about how children can be protected from new harmful influences. The book addresses the perennial controversies around media 'effects' from a range of academic perspectives. It examines critically the view that technology has dramatically changed modern children's lives, and looks at how technology has both changed, and sustained, children's cultural experiences in different times and places. Does new interactive technology give children a 'voice'? It can permit children to be their own authors and to engage in civil society, as well as to explore taboo and potentially dangerous areas. The book discusses how children can use technology to enhance their role as 'citizens in the making', as well its utilizing more playful applications. The book includes interviews with both producers and consumers - media workers, and children and their families, and has historical and contemporary illustrations.
