This edited volume presents the latest scholarly endeavors to synergize Chinese linguistics with Chinese language education and L2 Chinese acquisition, a direction of inquiry that has emerged as a rapidly developing area and attracted both teaching practitioners and linguists’ interests in recent years. The studies presented in the volume approach a diversity of issues, ranging over linguistics-informed Chinese language education in the contexts of Hong Kong, mainland China, and overseas countries; language pedagogies along various linguistic approaches; L2 Chinese development of different linguistic properties; bilingualism and multilingualism among adult and school learners; as well as linguistically grounded Chinese language learning and teaching via digital means. The volume offers to deepen the reader’s understanding of the existing theories on Chinese language education and L2 Chinese acquisition, and the linguistic theories regarding the nature, component modules, and development of the human language faculty. It also offers new pedagogical inspiration, based on cutting-edge empirical research, for Chinese language teaching in different educational settings. Of interest to scholars in the fields of Chinese language teaching and learning, second language acquisition, or applied linguistics, this volume contributes to the emerging field of educational applications of linguistics and presents an overarching framework that bridges a long-lasting division between language teaching practice and linguistic research.

The Rise Of Chinese As A Global Language written by Jeffrey Gil and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-06-07 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
This book investigates the macroacquisition of Chinese – its large-scale acquisition and adoption for various purposes by individuals, governments and organisations – and the implications of this process for the future of English as a global language. The author contextualises the macroacquisition of Chinese within the global ecology of languages, then analyses the factors responsible for the macroacquisition of Chinese, showing, in contrast to most academic and popular commentary, that a character-based writing system will not stop Chinese from becoming a global language. He then articulates three possible future scenarios: English remaining a dominant global language, English and Chinese both being global languages, and Chinese becoming a global language instead of English. The book concludes by outlining directions for further research on the acquisition and use of Chinese around the world. It will be of interest to students and scholars with an interest in English as a global language, Chinese as a second/foreign language, language education policy, and applied linguistics more generally.

"This monograph reports on a longitudinal inquiry into mainland Chinese undergraduates' language learning experiences at an English medium university in a multilingual setting with a focus on their strategic language learning efforts. This book examines the issue as to what extent language learners' strategic learning efforts depend on their 'choice', if 'the element of choice' is the defining characteristic of language learners' strategic learning behavior. The inquiry, using a qualitative and ethnographic research approach, reveals dynamic interaction between learners' agency and contextual conditions underlying the participants' strategic learning process. Such understanding informs pedagogical efforts to foster individual learners' capacity for strategic learning and their capacities in opening up and sustaining a social learning space for exercising their strategic learning capacity or utilizing their strategic learning knowledge." --Book Jacket.

This book takes stock of current research into computer learner corpora conducted both by ELT and SLA specialists. It should be of particular interest to researchers looking to assess its relevance to SLA theory and ELT practice. Throughout the volume, emphasis is also placed on practical, methodological aspects of computer learner corpus research, in particular the contribution of technology to the research process. The advantages and disadvantages of automated and semi-automated approaches are analyzed, the capabilities of linguistic software tools investigated, the corpora (and compilation processes) described in detail. In this way, an important function of the volume is to give practical insight to researchers who may be considering compiling a corpus of learner data or embarking on learner corpus research. The volume is divided into three main sections: Section 1 gives a general overview of learner corpus research; Section 2 illustrates a range of corpus-based approaches to interlanguage analysis; Section 3 demonstrates the direct pedagogical relevance of learner corpus work.
