In April 1858, the directors of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna selected Johann Herbeck (1831–77) as the founding conductor of their new mixed chorus, the Singverein. Already the conductor of the Wiener Männergesang-Verein since 1856, Herbeck eagerly embraced the challenges of his new position, composing several fine settings of German text for mixed chorus in 1858. By 1875 his output in this genre had reached over four dozen compositions, twenty-four of which are presented in this edition along with an additional version of one of them for men’s chorus. These works range from tuneful, strophic songs to more extensive, sophisticated compositions. Herbeck programmed some of the former in Singverein concerts as folksongs, concealing his authorship in order to avoid criticism. He even passed off two choruses as the work of Hans Leo Hassler and Melchior Franck. The repertoire in this edition reveals Herbeck’s mastery of choral composition.

A unique anthology which casts its net far and wide across seven centuries of unaccompanied European choral music, this book is a fascinating selection of thirty pieces, ideal for enterprising choirs looking for something out of the ordinary to enliven their repertoire. Diversity and eclecticism are the hallmarks of this stimulating collection: the pieces range from two to eight voices; from monuments of the Renaissance to miniature canons by Lawes, Schubert, and Brahms; from "Sumer is icumen in" to Stanford and Grieg. This is a truly European anthology, encompassing the music of composers from England, France, Spain, Norway, Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands. The contents are arranged chronologically, and though they include a few classics of the genre that no such survey can afford to ignore, the majority of pieces are unjustifiably lesser known. All are newly edited from their sources, at original pitch and in original note-values wherever practical; minimal editorial intervention allows this music to breathe afresh. There are notes on each piece, and prose translation for non-English texts.

Johann Herbeck (1831–77) was a major musical figure in Vienna in the third quarter of the nineteenth century. He was, at various points in his career, conductor of the Wiener Männergesang-Verein, conductor of the Singverein, musical director of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, musical director of the Court Chapel, and director of the Court Opera. Herbeck joined the Wiener Männergesang-Verein in 1852, served as its conductor from 1856 to 1866, and continued as honorary conductor until his early death. During this time, he composed over a hundred works for men’s chorus. The pieces selected for this volume display Herbeck’s mastery of the musical idioms of his time.
