This book reflects a preoccupation with analysing the early Byzantine chronicles, above all the very different works of Marcellinus and Malalas, both as historiographical artefacts and as testimony for the years they cover. Many of the studies here demonstrate that, when set in context, even the briefest chronicle entry may shed new light on some aspect of early Byzantine politics, topography or prosopography. Particular themes are the development of the Christian chronicle as a form of presenting the past, the ceremonial life of Constantinople, and the relations between the Roman government and the tribes invading the Balkans.

The church fathers, as they did in earlier books dealing with Israel's history from the time of Joshua to the united monarchy, found ample material for typological and moral interpretation in 1-2 Kings, 1-2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther. It will be immediately clear to readers of this volume that they gave much more attention to 1-2 Kings than to others; whether this was due to a certain repetitiveness in the story line or other reasons is unclear. But the narratives of wise King Solomon, the construction of the temple, the prophets Elijah and Elisha, and the fates of various faithful and unfaithful kings and other powerful people were well suited to their purposes. Among Greek commentators in this Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture volume, readers will find Justin Martyr, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Methodius, Eusebius of Caesarea, Athanasius, Cyril of Jerusalem, Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus, John Chrysostom, Cyril of Alexandria, Theodoret of Cyr, Procopius of Gaza and John the Monk. Among Latin commentators are Tertullian, Cyprian, Novatian, Lactantius, Ambrose, Jerome, Prudentius, Augustine, Paulinus of Nola, John Cassian, Peter Chrysologus, Maximus of Turin, Salvian the Presbyter, Fulgentius of Ruspe, Caesarius of Arles, Gregory the Great, Bede and Rabanus Maurus. Syriac commentators include Aphrahat, Ephrem, Sahdona, Isaac of Nineveh and Isho'dad of Merv. Together they set before readers a table of delights and theological insights, some of which are here available to English readers for the first time.

The Old Testament Books of Chronicles contain some of the most neglected passages in all of Scripture. Understanding their message can be a difficult and daunting task for the modern reader. Patrick Reardon brings these important books to life, unfolding their powerful message for our own day. Like any family history, the story of Chronicles is told with a distinct purpose in mind. It asks the question: "What was the real and lasting significance of King David and his house?" Beginning with the long list of names of the first chapter, this heritage is revealed in cosmic significance. It has in fact become the family tree of every true believer. Perhaps there is no other individual of any prominence in the history of religion about whom so many differences exist as about Jesus, the son of Mary and Joseph. In The Jesus Christ Chronicles, Wazir Kooloo shares a comprehensive examination of the negative Islamic schools of thought about Jesus while analyzing past mistakes and answering long-held questions. While relying on the verses within the Holy Quran as a starting point, Kooloo takes spiritual seekers on a journey that delves into the unknown true facts surrounding Mother Mary, her parents, and her initiation into the services of the Temple; the historical account of Jesus pilgrimage to India; and the Prophets journey to Mount of Olives where He is told He must suffer great persecution for the honor of God. Kooloo follows the story of Jesus life to 33 ADa time in history that many biblical scholars refer to as the Year of the Passion of Christ, when an event unraveled that changed the course of religious history forever. The Jesus Christ Chronicles utilizes well-researched facts as it shares a fresh perspective on religion, philosophy, and reality.
