The New Interpreter S Handbook Of Preaching written by and has been published by Abingdon Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-11-01 with Religion categories.

The New Interpreter’s Handbook of Preaching is a major reference tool for preaching, with articles on every facet of Christian sermon preparation and delivery. This resource is both scholarly and practical. It focuses on the most distinctive feature and greatest strength of homiletics as a discipline: It is rooted in interdisciplinary scholarship and it develops theory geared to practice. Its theory arises out of the study of both excellent preaching past and present and actual sermon preparation and composition. When theory and practice critique each other, it is possible to produce guidelines that assist greater excellence and economy in preaching the gospel. Excellence in standards is an area in which homiletics needs to grow, and this project will be both a means to encourage and develop it. A guiding question throughout will be, Will it preach? The answers will be offered in the sense that “here is something that works well,” rather than “here is something to try.” Preachers will turn to this resource with the expectation that they will find scholarly treatment of topics, brief bibliographies of relevant key books and articles, along with practical methodological suggestions for preachers to employ. The contributors are homileticians, preachers, and writers in various disciplines who are committed to the pulpit through practice.

This book is a reprint of key sermons by Rev. Charles Strong who founded the Australian Church in 1885 after being accused of heresy relating to the atonement. Strong was a pioneer progressive, outlining an understanding of the Christian religion that was a hundred years ahead of the current progressive Christian movement in Australia. His goal, he said, was to Re-interpret Christianity in the light of modern knowledge, the principles of development, and the spirit of religion as distinguished from the letter; to re-interpret Christianity just as Copernicus and Galileo re-interpreted astronomy. Strong's focus was on knowing the Spirit as a universal all-animating Spirit, an eternal and deep dimension of reality within humans as well as nature. The Kingdom of God is really the Kingdom of Love; love is the force of God at work in humans to change society. This volume reprints five sermons published originally in 1894, sermons which re ect his progressive approach to spirituality and faith. Norman Habel has done more than anyone else to keep the courage, honesty, and scholarship of 19th century 'progressive' Charles Strong before the public. Thanks to this important edited collection of some of Strong's sermons his task has now become much easier. May it be widely read and appreciated... Rex A E Hunt Author and Founding Director, The Centre for Progressive Religious Thought, Canberra Norman Habel is a Professorial Fellow at Flinders University. He has a Wendish Lutheran background and has long been exploring the boundaries of his faith in the context of the Lutheran Church. These boundaries relate to interpretation of the Bible, the spirituality of Aboriginal peoples, the mystery of ecology and the Book of Nature. He has published studies in all of these areas. Norman Habel is chair of the Charles Strong Memorial Trust.

Faulty Bible Interpretation lies at the root of every major mistake and 'ism' assailing churches today, and countless Christians are asking for the old, traditional and proven way of handling the Bible to be spelled out plainly. A new approach to interpretation has also gripped many evangelical seminaries and Bible colleges, an approach based on the ideas of unbelieving critics, stripping the Bible of God's message, and leaving pastors impoverished in their preaching. This book reveals what is happening, providing many brief examples of right and wrong interpretation. The author shows that the Bible includes its own rules of interpretation, and every believer should know what these are.

Excerpt from Christ His Own Interpreter: And Other Sermons John X' am the good Shepherd: the good Shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. If there ever was a Being, wearing the human form and living among men, who knew Himself and why He came here it was the Man Christ Jesus. He always walked in the shadow of the Cross He never forgot that He came here to, do the Father's will. Self-knowledge is the most difficult knowledge which men ever attain. There is no sphynx in Egypt like the sphynx in a man's bosom. Men think too much or too little of them selves. They pride themselves on being What they are not: on having a Sphere which is not theirs. They undertake to do what they can not do they leave undone What they might do. All from want of self-knowledge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
