Excerpt from Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life The New Testament is essentially a modern book. En grafted into the life and permeating the thought of the centuries as is the power of its Central Figure, the one thing that impresses the student more than all else, as he endeavors to catch the spirit of New Testament teaching, is its thor oughly modern tone. The setting is local and Oriental, but the principles and their application are universal and human. The discourses here gathered together are an attempt to select from a ministry extending over a period of ten years, most of it in a single pulpit, the ruling ideas and efforts of that ministry to present a spherical view of the application of the Christian gospel to the whole of modern life, as we live it in America. Carrying out this purpose, I have made several excursions into the region of apostolic psychology; then again, I have tried to apply the teachings of Christ to the social and political life of our time, an experiment always fruitful of danger and misunderstanding, but none the less necessary for that. I have further outlined the relations of Christianity to our educational ideas and method, especially the place of the Bible in university instruction, following this with a literary criticism or two, in which I have made some observations on the literary and dramatic portraiture of gospel ideas. Then, too, I have added a number of dis courses on the spiritual life itself, as distinguished from the various modes of it which I have been describing. Excerpt from The Transient and Permanent in Christianity A number of the earliest and the latest, as well as several of the most significant, of Theodore Parker's sermons have been brought together in this volume. His South Boston sermon, which first brought him into prominence as an expounder of the new theology, gives title to the volume. It is followed by his epoch-making discourse on Jesus, at "the Great and Thursday Lecture." The earliest written of his sermons to secure the honor of print, that on the relations of the Bible to the soul, has never before been reprinted from the pages of the obscure magazine in which it appeared. Following these sermons are a number which were first printed in "The Dial," the famous organ of transcendentalism. Emerson said of them, that "some numbers had an instant exhausting sale, because of papers by Theodore Parker." Among these were the sermons on "The Pharisees," and "Primitive Christianity." His earliest critical article is his "Thoughts on Theology," in review of Dorner's book on Christ. His sermon on goodness also occupied a conspicuous place in his controversy with the religious leaders of his day. Special occasions gave emphasis to his discourses on the use of Sunday, and the real meaning of revivals. The revival sermons, if severe, are sane and profoundly ethical. His first ordination sermon after that at South Boston gave opportunity for a more explicit interpretation of his later and wiser theology. I have no purpose of dealing with the remainder of this clause, nor, indeed, with it at all, except as one instance of His use of the expression. But I felt it might be interesting, and might set old truths in a brighter light, if we gather together the instances in which Christ speaks of the great necessity which dominated His life, and shaped even small acts. The expression is most frequently used in reference to the Passion and Resurrection. There are many instances in the other Gospels, in which He speaks of that must. The first of these is that of my text.
