US-Japan meetings on laboratory animal science have been held virtually every year since 1980 under the US-Japan Cooperative Program on Science and Technology. Over the years these meetings have resulted in a number of important documents including the Manual of Microbiologic of Monitoring of Laboratory Animals published in 1994 and the article Establishment and Preservation of Reference Inbred Strains of Rats for General Purposes published in 1991. In addition to these publications, these meetings have been instrumental in increasing awareness of the need for microbiologic monitoring of laboratory rodents and the need for genetic definition and monitoring of mice and rats.

Chromosome Identification—Technique and Applications in Biology and Medicine contains the proceedings of the Twenty-Third Nobel Symposium held at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, Sweden, on September 25-27,1972. The papers review advances in chromosome banding techniques and their applications in biology and medicine. Techniques for the study of pattern constancy and for rapid karyotype analysis are discussed, along with cytological procedures; karyotypes in different organisms; somatic cell hybridization; and chemical composition of chromosomes. This book is comprised of 51 chapters divided into nine sections and begins with a survey of the cytological procedures, including fluorescence banding techniques, constitutive heterochromatin (C-band) technique, and Giemsa banding technique. The following chapters explore computerized statistical analysis of banding pattern; the use of distribution functions to describe integrated profiles of human chromosomes; the uniqueness of the human karyotype; and the application of somatic cell hybridization to the study of gene linkage and complementation. The mechanisms for certain chromosome aberration are also analyzed, together with fluorescent banding agents and differential staining of human chromosomes after oxidation treatment. This monograph will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of biology and medicine.

Proceedings of the XIV World Meeting of the International Society for the Research on Aggression: Prevention and Control of Aggression and the Impact on its Victims, held in July 9-14, 2000, in Valencia, Spain. Aggression is an aspect of human society that has interested scientists for many decades, and their work has provided important knowledge about its causes and way to prevent and control this behavior. However, not only scientists but many professionals working in the wide spectrum of society, from family to international policy, are interested in having programs of interventions capable of reducing aggression and violence in our society. This comprehensive book is a compendium of most research approaches that are currently taking place in the field of aggression, focusing on the interventions to control and prevent this behavior and the impact on its victims. The chapters of the book include biological approaches to aggression, such as neuroanatomy, neurochemistry, neuroendocrinology, genetics and psychopathology; information about aggression in children and adolescents in different settings such as family, school and community; characteristics if aggression in specific relationships such as marital and sexual, and specific settings such as bars, prisons and traffic; and cultural approaches to aggression, social prejudice, war and programs of peace. Furthermore, a small number of representative chapters about victims are included, ranging from the impact of aggression on behavior and physiology in animal models to victims of war. As this book highlights, the interventions to prevent and control aggression have to be diverse (highly heterogenic) in order to deal with all aspects of human beings and society, ranging from pharmacological control in individuals to programs of peace to promote respect among people and among nations. Scientists, academics and professionals dealing with any facet of aggression and its impact on our society will obtain in this book information about the complexity of this research field and the ways to approach our objective: eliminate aggression from the human behavioral repertoire.

Mouse Genetics offers for the first time in a single comprehensive volume a practical guide to mouse breeding and genetics. Nearly all human genes are present in the mouse genome, making it an ideal organism for genetic analyses of both normal and abnormal aspects of human biology. Written as a convenient reference, this book provides a complete description of the laboratory mouse, the tools used in analysis, and procedures for carrying out genetic studies, along with background material and statistical information for use in ongoing data analysis. It thus serves two purposes, first to provide students with an introduction to the mouse as a model system for genetic analysis, and to give practicing scientists a detailed guide for performing breeding studies and interpreting experimental results. All topics are developed completely, with full explanations of critical concepts in genetics and molecular biology. As investigators around the world are rediscovering both the heuristic and practical value of the mouse genome, the demand for a succinct introduction to the subject has never been greater. Mouse Genetics is intended to meet the needs of this wide audience.

Techniques In Somatic Cell Genetics written by Jerry W. Shay and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-21 with Medical categories.

Somatic cell genetics is an exciting and rapidly expanding field of research. Since descriptions of the major experimental techniques in the field are scattered throughout various journals and other publications, there is a real need for a single reference source for both established investigators and students in the field. In addition, technical reports are frequently abridged such that many researchers are discouraged from attempting to adopt the appropriate methodology. This book, therefore, describes in detail the many recent technical advances in such areas of somatic cell genetics as transfer mediated by liposomes, erythrocyte ghosts, chromosomes, micro cells, mito chondria, and isolated nuclear DNA. These techniques have increased our understanding of the organization and regulation of eukaryotic cells. The production of antibiotic-resistant cell lines and their use in studying cytoplasmic inheritance are also included. Evidence for the cytoplasmic regulation of nuclear gene expression in eukaryotic cells is rapidly accumu lating following the characterization of cytoplasmic mutations. The produc tion of nuclear-coded mutations, their use in standard cell hybridization, and recent advances in techniques for fusing whole cells or cell components are also described.

Cell culture refers to the removal of cells from an animal or plant and their subsequent growth in a favourable artificial environment. The cells may be removed from the tissue directly and disaggregated by enzymatic or mechanical means before cultivation, or they may be derived from a cell line or cell strain that has already been established. Stem cells retain the capacity to self renew as well as to produce progeny with a restricted mitotic potential and restricted range of distinct types of differentiated cell they give rise to. The formation of blood cells, also called haematopoiesis, is the classical example of concept of stem cells. Animal cell and tissue culture is an integral part of biotechnology and this book covers all the aspects of animal cell culture. Animal cells are used for making new vaccines, specific animal proteins such as intergerons, blood factors and hormones, monoclonal antibodies for use as diagnostic and therapeutics, gene probes as diagnostic too, enzymes and last but not the least many new and important compounds. This book contains eleven Chapters, which deal with historic developments, laboratory design, sterilization procedures and various facets of animal cell culture. This includes preservation, characterizations, storage and transport of cells, their monitoring and technologies for cell banking.
