Excerpt from Church and State in New England The complete separation of church and state is an American doctrine. European governments have long maintained church establishments. The Puritan colonists of New England in the seventeenth century were not prepared to organize on principles that characterize the relations of church and state in America today. They followed the example Of the mother country and united the civil and ecclesiastical organizations. They estab lished the Congregational church and endeavored to maintain it by law against all Opposition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Church and State in Massachusetts: 1691-1740 Six years ago I was working on a brief study of the ecclesiastical development of provincial Massachusetts, to present as a master's thesis at the University of Illinois. In putting together the material I was struck with the fact that there were some broad empty spaces in the story of the gradual encroachments on the old Puritan system by religious dissenters. By the middle of the eighteenth century Anglicans, Baptists and Quakers were all recognized in ecclesiastical law and possessed certain privileges, but the process by which these results had been gained was not clear. Histories of New England Baptists showed that the real work of this sect was practically limited to the second half of the century; local histories of Anglican churches recounted the efforts of the Massachusetts Churchmen; but neither explained the steps by which all three groups gained a fairly comfortable status in Massachusetts law before the middle of the eighteenth century. A solution of this problem has been found in the early records of the Society of Friends in New England and in London. The best collection of New England Quaker records, the minutes of the New England Yearly Meeting and of the Rhode Island Quarterly, are in the library of the Moses Brown School at Providence. Others may be found at the Newport Historical Society, the New Bedford meeting house and the meeting house at Lynn. All have been used again and again for local and genealogical purposes but rarely for any general study. In every case they show so close a connection between the Quakers of Massachusetts and those of England that the records of the London Yearly Meeting and the London Meeting for Sufferings are essential for a clear understanding of what the New England Quakers of the early eighteenth century were doing. Excerpt from Church History of New England, From 1620 to 1804: Containing a View of the Principles and Practice, Declensions and Revivals, Oppression and Liberty of the Churches, and a Chronological Table Few Of his favoured brethren Of this generation, are adequately impressed with a sense Of their indebtedness to the labours Of this departed champion Of their cause. He was unquestionably one Of the most useful ministers that has ever appeared among the American Baptists. For fifty years, he was a laborious servant Of their churches; and for more than half this period, he diligently devoted what time he could spare from professional du ties, to historical researches. The vast fund Of materials which he thus accumulated, must have sunk into entire Oblivion, had it not been for his unwearied care. As a preacher he was entirely evangelical: pungency, pathos and power, characterized many of his discourses, which though unornamented with rhetorical language, were richly stored with scriptural truth. Excerpt from Vindication of the Government of New England Churches, And, the Churches Quarrel Espoused, or a Reply to Certain Proposals Dear sir, -i have re-read Mr. Wise's book, and think the republication of it by the Congregational Board of Publication very desirable. There is sharp and strong reasoning in it, and it marks our Congregationalism in Massachusetts for a full century. It has been the means of saving to our churches their true inde pendency, and our ministers from combining to exercise a joint in uence over them. It is also the best exposition of the platform that has ever been given, and has wellnigh brought its two faces to look in the same direction. It is the only book of au thority recognized by our courts of law as a reliable commentary on the platform. These reasons seem conclusive. Excerpt from Reminiscences of a New England Church and People Chestnut Street, where the tall graceful Spire, one hundred and sixty-five feet in height, was seen against the delicate tracery of the top branches of the old elms, some of which had probably stood there as long as the church. On both sides of the street are some of the finest of the colonial houses for which Salem has been famous. It is near the centre of the city, very accessible, but very quiet, a block away from cars of all sorts. I remember that many years ago a gentle man of the neighborhood spent two years abroad and on his return said, that he had seen nothing in Europe that he liked better than Dr. Emerson's steeple. Spoken of in that way during the life of the old clergyman. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
