Peter Winch se propone aquí examinar críticamente la concepción de la relación entre los estudios sociales, la filosofía y las ciencias naturales, y demuestra que la filosofía no puede ser anticientífica, pero tampoco desempeña un papel subordinado respecto de la ciencia social. Todo estudio meritorio de la sociedad debe tener carácter filosófico, y de toda filosófica trata de la inteligibilidad de lo real. Para especificar esto, Winch recurre a la noción de regla según Wittgenstein, que es justamente aquello en virtud de lo cual puede llegar a conocer algo dentro de una forma de vida. Lo que los hombres hacen se rige por reglas, y estas se definen por conceptos compartidos que presentan una concatenación interna. Al idea misma de regla supone una relación social. Las relaciones sociales deben ser similares a las relaciones lógicas entre proposiciones porque estas dependen, en sí mismas, de las relaciones sociales entre los hombres. Si se puede decir que en nuestra época se ha producido una revolución filosófica, ellas ha consistido en esta manera de referir la elucidación epistemológica a las interrelaciones de los hombres en sociedad. El ensayo de Winch es una reflexión crítica sobre el positivismo en filosofía y en ciencias sociales, que se inspira en el pensamiento de Wittgenstein, cuya premisa se podría comprimir en esta cita: «Lo que ha de aceptarse, lo que está dado, es –podría decirse– la existencia de formas de vida».

Elsewhere 1 we were concerned with fundamental aspects of the question how man can comprehend his fellow-men. We analyzed man's subjective experiences of the Other and found in them the basis for his understanding of the Other's subjective processes of consciousness. The very assumption of the existence of the Other, however, introduces the dimension of intersub jectivity. The world is experienced by the Self as being inhabited by other Selves, as being a world for others and of others. As we had occasion to point out, intersubjective reality is by no means homogeneous. The social world in which man finds himself exhibits a complex structure; fellow-men appear to the Self under different aspects, to which correspond different cognitive styles by which the Self perceives and apprehends the Other's thoughts, motives, and actions. In the present investigation it will be our main task to describe the origin of the differentiated structures of social reality as well as to reveal the principles underlying its unity and coherence. It must be stressed that careful description of the processes which enable one man to understand another's thoughts and actions is a prerequisite for the methodology of the empirical social sciences.
