Natural cilia are tiny hairs on cells which have generated and sensed fluid flow in biological systems for billions of years. Mimicking this action in artificial systems presents interesting opportunities for flow control in lab-on-a-chip devices. Research into this field began almost a decade ago, and this book presents the state-of-the-art in this rapidly developing field of research inspired by nature. Establishing a link between nature and technology is a major attraction to those entering the field, which encompasses materials, processing, fluid mechanics, fluid-structure interaction, and biomedical applications. Artificial Cilia will appeal to anyone working in these areas and presents beautiful examples of how a biological system can form the successful basis for research and technical applications. The editors have been pioneers in the field since establishing a major European project on artificial cilia in 2005, and they are joined by leading experts from across the globe in presenting a comprehensive digest of this exciting new technology.

The Biology of Cilia and Flagella reviews advances in the study of cilia and flagella since 1928. This book focuses on four main topics—structure of cilia, factors that affect ciliary activity, movement of cilia and flagella, and coordination of beat of cilia. In these topics, this compilation specifically discusses the intracellular structures associated with ciliary bases; viscosity of the medium and ciliary activity, and energy relationships of cilia and flagella. The compounding of synchronously beating cilia, variations in shaft structure, and control of ciliary activity by the organism are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the determination of the rate of beat of cilia and root-fiber systems and coordination of ciliary beat. This publication is suitable for biologists and clinicians of other disciplines researching on the structure and physiology of cilia and flagella.

Cilia Ciliated Epithelium And Ciliary Activity written by José A. Rivera and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-22 with Science categories.
Cilia, Ciliated Epithelium, and Ciliary Activity reviews the state of knowledge of the activity of cilia and of the role these structures play in maintaining the normal physiology of the body, especially in the respiratory and genital systems. It relates the diversity of manifestations shown by cilia and ciliated epithelium in health and disease, and the effect of the physicochemical agents studied which influence the life and death of these structures. The volume is organized into five sections. Section A provides a general discussion on the history of studies on the ciliated epithelium; the distribution and morphology of cilia; development, regeneration and transformation of ciliated cells; and culture of cilia and ciliated epithelium. Section B deals with ciliary activity while Section C examines the effects of physical and chemical agents on cilia. Section D takes up the function of cilia. Section E contains a list of references of the literature on these topics from the historical beginning of studies in the field to the time of writing. This volume is intended to be a ready-made reference source for workers in the fields of biological sciences and medicine.

This volume of the Handbook of Zoology summarizes "small" groups of animals across the animal kingdom. Dicyemida and Orthonectida are enigmatic parasites, formerly united as "Mesozoa" and their position among the multicellular animals is still not known with certainty. Placozoa are small, flat marine animals which provide important information on metazoan evolution. Comb jellies (Ctenophora) are esthetically fascinating animals which cause considerable discussion about their phylogenetic position. Seisonida are closely related to rotifers and acanthocephalans. Cycliophora were discovered and described as one of the last higher taxa and surprise by their complex life cycle. Kamptozoa (= Entoprocta) are small sessile animals in the sea and sometimes also in freshwater. Arrow worms (Chaetognatha) play an important role as predators in the plankton, but they also include benthic forms. Pterobranchia and acorn worms (Enteropneusta) belong to the deuterostomia and are related to echinoderms. In particular enteropneusts play an important role in understanding deuterostome evolution. These chapters provide up to date reviews of these exiting groups with reference to the important literature and therefore serves as an important source of information.

Understanding live cells at the single molecule level is the most important and single major challenge facing biology and medicine today. Nanobiology focuses on the properties and structure of complex assemblies of biomolecules—biochips and molecular motors, for example—in conjunction with distinctive surfaces, rods, dots, and materials of nanoscience. Nano Cell Biology will describe the current applications of nanobiology to the study of the structure, function, and metabolic processes of cells. - Provides historical background on this newly emerging field - Covers the latest application of new instrumentation in the field - Detailed protocols in the study of live cells at the nanometer level - Discusses future technologies and their applications in the study of living cells
