"Watered with the blood and tears of countless poets and authors and naturally expressing the most heartfelt emotions of ancient peoples, poems of mourning and texts of lament stand out in classical Chinese literature as brilliant and unique. Composed and celebrated over 3000 years, they are central to the Chinese literary tradition but have been largely unknown to English readers. Including 100 major pieces by leading literary figures from 800 BCE - 1800, this is the first English anthology of classic Chinese poems of mourning and texts of sacrificial orations. With annotated translations by leading scholars and reading guides accompanying each piece, this book reveals a powerful literary heritage to students and serious readers of Chinese literature, history and civilization"--

Fables For The Patriarchs written by Jowen R. Tung and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with History categories.

This provocative study explores issues of gender in Tang-dynasty literature and culture, and their meaning for society as a whole. Drawing on a comprehensive range of historical, literary, and social texts, Jowen R. Tung unravels the complex mechanisms of one of the world's oldest patriarchal systems. With remarkable depth and originality of analysis, the author persuasively applies contemporary feminist theory to Tang dynasty poetry, narrative, and anecdotal literature. Interpreting both well-known and obscure works in fresh ways, Tung sheds light on areas long left shadowed or ignored. In the process, she paints a far darker picture of a period traditionally known as the 'golden age.'

Excerpt from A Few Famous Chinese Poems: Translated Into English The initiative of this little book was accidental. One day in June, feeling weary of commercial papers and Chinese account-books, I opened a volume of Chinese poetry that was lying on my desk and listlessly turned over the pages. As I was doing so my eye caught sight of the phrase. Red rain of peach flowers fell. That would be refreshing, I said to myself, on such a day as this; and then I went on with my work again. But in the evening I returned to the book of Chinese poetry and made a free translation of the poem in which I had seen the metaphor quoted above. The translation seemed to me and some friends pleasantly readable st) in leisure hours I have translated a few more poems and ballads and these I now venture to publish in a small volume, thinking they may give the readers a little pleasure and also call forth criticism that will be useful in preparing a larger volume which I hope to publish hereafter; for it can hardly be said that hitherto the field of Chinese poetry has been widely explored by foreign students of the Chinese language. Several of the translations in this booklet are nearly literal. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
