Excerpt from Argentina and the Argentines: Notes and Impressions of a Five Years' Sojourn in the Argentine Republic, 1885-90 This volume pretends to be nothing more than its subsidiary title indicates; namely, a series of "Notes" or sketches of Argentina and the Argentines, made during a sojourn of nearly six years in Buenos Ayres. Of the imperfections and shortcomings of the "Notes," no one could be more sensible than the writer of them. Begun hardly in earnest; without connection, continuity, or definite plan; they may be compared rather to instantaneous photographs taken at haphazard, and which depict alike the natural and the ludicrous, than to elaborate and carefully studied pictures. In addition to other inconveniences, the writer had the misfortune to lose, during the troublous times following the Revolution of July, 1890, a large collection of shorthand notes relating chiefly to the events of the years 1886-87 - a loss which it was impossible to repair, and which has compelled him to trust to his memory for some of the particulars related in the book; and although pains have been taken to verify, as far as was possible at this distance of time and place, the particulars referred to, it is not improbable that some inaccuracies of detail may have crept into the descriptions, and equally possible that the "Notes" which have been perforce omitted might have been found more interesting and instructive than those which are now given. Excerpt from Argentina From a British Point of View: And Notes on Argentine Life IN May last I was asked to read, towards the end of the year, a paper on Argentina, before the Royal Society of Arts. The task of compiling that paper was one of absorbing interest to me; and though I fully realise how inadequately I have dealt with so interesting a subject, I venture to think that the facts and figures which the paper contains may be Of interest to some, at any rate, of the Shareholders of the Santa Fe Land Company. It is upon this supposition that it is published. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Real Argentine: Notes and Impressions of a Year in the Argentine and Uruguay So many books have been written on South Ameri can countries within recent years that the addition of one more to the already formidable list calls for a word of explanation, if not apology. SO far as American writers on the latin-american Republics are concerned, many of their works are based upon the statistical returns of the respective Govern ments, or on topographical and historical data, easily obtainable at the public libraries. Others, more pop ular, but perhaps less valuable, are the hasty records of fleeting visits. These latter are so apt to be in formed by a spirit of indiscriminate admiration that they present misleading and untrue notions of the coun tries described. Excerpt from Five Months in the Argentine: From a Woman's Point of View, 1918 to 1919 It seemed perilous enough to go into those little danc ing boats oneself, but to have one's precious belongings of trunks and hand bags lowered by ropes from the big ocean liner seemed almost overwhelming, for, as we had unloaded at the different ports at which we had stopped on our way down, the liner had become lighter and lighter and had risen higher and higher out of the water, until now the small row boats seemed-like mere specks on the waves below. Excerpt from Modern Argentina, the El Dorado of to-Day: With Notes on Uruguay and Chile In his desire to acknowledge the valuable assistance which friends in Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile have rendered in connection with this small work the author finds himself confronted by a difficulty. Where so many, out of pure goodwill and interest in their native or adopted land, have spared neither time nor trouble in placing their knowledge at his disposal, the compilation of a full list of the names of those to whom he is under an obligation would be impossible. So far as the city of Buenos Aires is concerned, the writer desires to express his cordial thanks for the assistance received at the hands of his compatriots, and more especially to those numerous members of the Strangers', English, Hurlingham, and Lomas clubs who accompanied him in his explorations of the metropolis and its surroundings. As regards the various Estancieros whose guest he had the pleasure of being, it suffices to say that the famed hospitality of the Camp is indeed worthy of its reputation. ‘A highly original, piercingly beautiful work, full of beautiful shocks... I felt like a door had been kicked open in my brain’ Johanna Thomas-Corr, Observer A woman searches Buenos Aires for the paintings that are her inspiration and her refuge. Her life -- she is a young mother with a complicated family -- is sometimes overwhelming. But among the canvases, often little-known works in quiet rooms, she finds clarity and a sense of who she is . . . 'I was reminded of John Berger's Ways of Seeing, enfolded in tender and exuberant personal narratives' Claire-Louise Bennett 'This woman-guide, who goes from Lampedusa to The Doors with crushing elegance, is unforgettable' Mariana Enriquez 'A dazzling combination of memoir, fiction and art book, like nothing you’ve ever read before’ Elle
