Learn all about Cleopatra, a far more capable and powerful ruler than people have thought, in this lively and informative biography. Most of what we've known about Cleopatra—and what crept into art, film, and literature—came from her enemies, the Romans. Ascending to the throne at young age of 17, Cleopatra proved to be a brilliant negotiator who forged alliances that kept her in power and in control of her kingdom. This book about Egypt's last and most famous pharaoh features an inviting text, many sidebars, and excellent color illustrations: maps, photos of ancient artifacts, and artworks from many historical periods.

The Reign Of Cleopatra written by Stanley Mayer Burstein and has been published by University of Oklahoma Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-12-01 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

An engaging, accessible biography of the legendary Egyptian queen, with source documents Ambitious, intelligent, and desired by powerful men, Cleopatra VII came to power at a time when Roman and Egyptian interests increasingly concerned the same object: Egypt itself. Cleopatra lived and reigned at the center of this complex and persistent power struggle. Her legacy has since lost much of its former political significance, as she has come to symbolize instead the potent force of female sexuality and power. In this engaging and multifaceted account, Stanley M. Burstein displays Cleopatra in the full manifold brilliance of the multiple cultures, countries, and people that surrounded her throughout her compelling life, and in so doing develops a stunning picture of a legendary queen and a deeply historic reign. Designed as an accessible introduction to Cleopatra VII and her time, The Reign of Cleopatra offers readers and researchers an appealing mix of descriptive chapters, biographical sketches, and annotated primary documents. The narrative chapters conclude with a discussion of Cleopatra’s significance as a person, a queen, and a symbol. A glossary and annotated bibliography round out the volume.

In 30 B.C., Queen Cleopatra took her own life in a mausoleum in Alexandria, thus ending the reign of the last independent pharaohs of Egypt. After her death, Egypt became one of the many provinces of the Roman Empire. Cleopatra’s rule of more than two decades involved ruthless power struggles with her siblings and alliances and affairs with the likes of Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony. It was her life that inspired the very famous play written by Shakespeare, Anthony and Cleopatra. While she is one of the most alluring figures in ancient history, not many people know the truth about her life, battles, and affairs. She was the last ruler of the Ptolemaic Dynasty and is often regarded in modern times as a symbol of female power in the ancient world. While many people considered her beauty as her biggest asset, the truth is that her intellect and her charms and her beautiful voice were actually her biggest assets. In fact, she was believed to have a manly face, a face which could by no means be considered beautiful. This book is an attempt to look at her life right from her birth until the day she took her own life.

Cleopatra rule Ptolemaic Egypt from 51-30 BC, and was the last Macedonian rule of that country. She first ruled jointly with her brothers/husbands Ptolemy XIII and Ptolemy XIV, but her romantic liaisons with two of the most famous Romans of their day ensured Cleopatra's undying fame and place in history. Here relationship with Julius Caesar established her firmly upon the throne. When Caesar was assassinated on the Ides of March in 44 BC, Cleopatra returned from Rome to Egypt and bgean an ill-fated love affair with the brilliant but self-indulgent Roman commander, Marc Antony. Their relationship was bitterly opposed by his brother-in-law Octavian (who became Emperor Augustus), and in 32 BC Rome declared war on Egypt. A decisive naval defeat at the Battle of Actium, off the west coast of Greece, sent the lovers back to Egypt where they committed suicide as Octavian captured the city - Cleopatra allegedly killed herself with an asp after Antony fell upon his sword.

An air of mystcry surrounds Cleopatra. A record of her reign as queen of Egypt simply doesn't exist and we must piece together her story from fragments, artifacts, and historical writings. Was she a selfish, extravagant, and overly ambitious tyrant? Or was she a patriotic advocate for her people with the courage to stand up to those who held power in Rome? Cleopatra spent her reign fighting for her right to rule and struggling to maintain Egypt's independence. Love, power, and political advantage became intertwined as Cleopatra aligned herself with the dominant political figures of her time. These partnerships both helped and hurt her beloved Egypt. So who was Cleopatra? Her motives may be open to debate, but it cannot be denied that she was a savvy political mastermind, a powerful queen, and a force to be reckoned with - in any age. Book jacket.
