The inflammatory bowel diseases, of unknown etiology and for which there are no cures, continue to attract the attention and interest of gastroenterologists, internists and surgeons. International symposia are common and it is safe to say that there is at least one major symposium held somewhere in the world each year. This book encompasses the proceedings of two recent symposia held in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. The symposia were the fifth and sixth international meetings focused on inflammatory bowel disease in Canada in the last eight years. Once again they were sponsored by Axcan Pharma, Inc. (formerly Interfalk Canada, Inc.) and endorsed by the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology. As has become traditional at such meetings the faculty was drawn from an international roster ofleaders in the field of inflammatory bowel disease and gastroenterology. The chapters of the proceedings provide a timely, up-to-date review of the major issues, including those within the realm of basic science and others dealing with clinical problems. The first symposium, 'Basic Research and Clinical Implications', was co-ordinated by John Wallace in association with Stephen Collins and Stephan Targan. The themes of this section were organized under the general topics of predisposing factors (genetics, animal models, infection, permeability, and immune deficits) and the pathophysiology of intestinal inflammation. The second symposium, Trends in Therapy' was organized by Lloyd Sutherland along with Franc;:ois Martin, Robin McLeod and Noel Williams.

Gene therapy for inflammatory diseases is a new , burgeoning field of medicine. Edited by the undisputed pioneers of this area of research, this volume is the first devoted to its topic. It contains thirteen chapters, each written by leaders in their respective fields, that summarize the state of the art in developing novel, gene based treatments for inflammatory diseases. As well as providing an introduction to the basic concepts of gene therapy and the use of naked DNA approaches, the book describes the advances that have been made in applying them to arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, Sjogren`s syndrome and transplantation. One chapter is devoted to discussing the first human clinical trials that apply gene therapy to the treatment of an inflammatory disease. As well as providing novel therapeutic approaches, gene therapy facilitates the development of new and improved animal models of disease; a chapter describing these advances is also included. As an up-to-date, timely book written by th

Digestive-disease-associated mortality accounts for a major part of all deaths in Western societies and inflammatory diseases such as GI infections, viral hepatitis, GERD or cancers due to chronic inflammation have a tangible economic and social impact. What further aggravates the situation is the fact that complex immunological disorders have surfaced where anti-infective treatments are not effective. Fortunately, due to breakthroughs in basic research that are being successfully translated into clinical practice, new treatment strategies are constantly evolving. In addition to the development of new therapeutic measures, however, it is also mandatory to review and periodically refine established treatment regimens to reflect current knowledge and ensure up-to-date medical care.Combining outstanding basic research reviews with cutting-edge treatment guidelines on inflammatory disorders of the GI tract, this book presents newly identified treatment targets and provides clinicians and practitioners in the field with a most useful account of the state of the art.

Now published in two volumes to accommodate new chapters on the many advances in understanding and treatment options, this volume represents the definitive reference on inflammatory bowel disease, a spectrum of diseases that is receiving increasing attention as our understanding of the etiological factors increases and diagnostic tools are refined. Basic research accelerated at the beginning of this decade and is now yielding new, more targeted treatments than were available just a few years ago. Volume 1 is on IBD and Ulcerative Colitis, and Volume 2 is on IBD and Crohn's Disease. All areas that were covered in the second edition have been expanded and updated. New sections include one addressing etiology and pathophysiology of IBD, including environmental influences and effect of age at onset, and one with a focus on aggravating factors in the IBD patient such as infectious agents, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and pregnancy.

Psychological Aspects Of Inflammatory Bowel Disease written by Simon R. Knowles and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-09-19 with Psychology categories.

In the Western world around 360 in every 100,000 individuals have inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a relapsing-remitting autoimmune disease that affects the gastrointestinal tract. Its impact on individual functioning across physical and psychosocial domains is significant and psychological distress is a common feature, with research suggesting that active IBD is associated with one of the highest rates of depression and anxiety of all chronic illnesses. Despite the high prevalence of mental health co-morbidities in IBD, psychological illness remains largely undertreated, with studies showing that 60% of IBD patients experiencing mental health problems do not receive adequate help. In this book, Knowles and Mikocka-Walus bring together world experts who practice integrated and holistic approach in their care for IBD patients, to provide an overview of research across a range of topics associated with the biopsychosocial treatment of IBD. Each chapter provides an up-to-date comprehensive consolidation and evaluation of the current literature alongside recommendations for practice. Key themes include: current understanding of the interrelationship of the neurological and biological aspects of IBD common concerns and issues individuals with IBD face exploring challenges across individual life-stages current evidence for psychosocial interventions recommendations for future directions of biopsychosocial work. Psychological Aspects of Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A biopsychosocial approach is a key resource for researchers, practitioners and academics considering psychosocial aspects of the disease and psychological interventions. It will also appeal to health psychologists and mental health practitioners working with clients with IBD, as well as gastroenterologists interested in a comprehensive and holistic approach to IBD management.

Thorough Overview Identifies and Addresses Critical Gaps in the Treatment of Several Chronic Diseases With increasing numbers of patients suffering from Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases (IMIDs), and with the increasing reliance on biopharmaceuticals to treat them, it is imperative that researchers and medical practitioners have a thorough understanding of the absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion (ADME) of therapeutic proteins as well as translational pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) modeling for them. This comprehensive volume answers that need to be addressed. Featuring eighteen chapters from world-renowned experts and opinion leaders in pharmacology, translational medicine and immunology, editors Honghui Zhou and Diane Mould have curated a much-needed collection of research on the advanced applications of pharmacometrics and systems pharmacology to the development of biotherapeutics and individualized treatment strategies for the treatment of IMIDs. Authors discuss the pathophysiology of autoimmune diseases in addition to both theoretical and practical aspects of quantitative pharmacology for therapeutic proteins, current translational medicine research methodologies and novel thinking in treatment paradigm strategies for IMIDs. Other notable features include: • Contributions from well-known authors representing leading academic research centers, specialized contract research organizations and pharmaceutical industries whose pipelines include therapeutic proteins • Chapters on a wide range of topics (e.g., pathophysiology of autoimmune diseases, biomarkers in ulcerative colitis, model-based meta-analysis use in the development of therapeutic proteins) • Case studies of applying quantitative pharmacology approaches to guiding therapeutic protein drug development in IMIDs such as psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis and lupus Zhou and Mould’s timely contribution to the critical study of biopharmaceuticals is a valuable resource for any academic and industry researcher working in pharmacokinetics, pharmacology, biochemistry, or biotechnology as well as the many clinicians seeking the safest and most effective treatments for patients dealing with chronic immune disorders.
