The Story of Art Coconut & Bamboo Although coconut cultivation is spread across 93 countries, providing jobs and creating livelihood opportunities for 64 million families around the globe, smallholder coconut farmers face numerous challenges now. A major concern is the broad gap between potential and real yield, and as such it is important to disseminate information for the implementation of research findings. Coconut research is celebrating its centenary in India, one of the leading coconut producing countries, making this a timely time to study the developments in research and development and the related technologies. This extensive and informative book covers all aspects of coconut; Therefore this book is of great interest to scholars, students, extension staff, development agencies and graduate farmers. Coconut palm is the hallmark of the tropical beaches with its often slanting trunks and symmetrical crown. For about a century from the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, the coconut oil was the most traded among all the vegetable oils. Every part of the palm was being put to active economic uses very ancient times. The coconut palm is the most ubiquitous plant species in the more than 30,000 islands that jot the tropical and subtropical seas of the Old World and in their littoral regions. It has been an integral component of the legends, Flores, ethnography, and lives of the people of these vast regions from prehistoric times. Firstly, what is called coconut? Any fruit? A motherfucker? Coconut can be a fruit, a nut and a seed for making it more complicated. (Technically it's a fibrous one-seeded drupe. Try telling your friends that.) When you'd pick up a coconut from a coconut palm, you'd find it's hard and green, the layer called the exocarp. Only below the layer is the husk, called the mesocarp (it looks dark and hairy). Within this is the endocarp, which is the seed outside. Open the seed, and you will touch the white layer of "meat" and liquid coconut. The fruit-nut has long been in use explorers wrote about coconuts after they visited India in the fifth century. From Hawaii to Madagascar coconut palms today grow in the tropics. While they are not native to the continental United States, the coconut palm was introduced and now grows well along the coastal regions of southern states such as Florida "Super food" and "coconut" are two words often used together in the wellness lexicon but there is still a shortage of empirical evidence.

Since the publication of "The coconut palm - A monograph" in 1960, considerable information has been accrued on the crop through work at research institutes, international organisations and development agencies. Although coconut cultivation is spread over 93 countries, providing employment and creating livelihood opportunities to 64 million families around the globe, smallholder coconut farmers are now facing numerous challenges. The wide gap between the potential and actual yield is a major concern, and as such it is necessary to disseminate knowledge in order to implement research findings. Coconut research in India, one of the leading coconut producing countries, is celebrating its centenary, making this an opportune time to review the research and development advances and the relevant technologies. This detailed, comprehensive book covers all aspects of coconut, from the origins to cultivation, breeding, physiology and value addition, as well as subjects of topical interest like nutrition and health, biotechnology, and climate change and carbon sequestration. Written by leading experts in the fields it emphasises that the livelihood of the small coconut landholders is the ultimate aim of scientists and developmental agencies, and outlines various important strategies to make coconut farming more remunerative globally. It discusses work in all the major coconut growing countries and outlines suggestions for international cooperation. Research work on the crop is comparatively difficult because of its perennial nature, longevity, height, long juvenile phase, large sized nuts, cross pollination and seed propagation. As these special features necessitate greater investment of resources, time and land, it is all the more imperative that research is not duplicated and the information and experience becoming available around the world is shared so that it can be fully utilised. In this context periodic publications, compiling all the available information on coconut assume greater significance. This book is therefore of great value to researchers, students, extension workers, developmental agencies and progressive farmers.

Science Of Wood Degradation And Its Protection written by R. Sundararaj and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-03-16 with Science categories.

This edited book covers all aspects of wood degradation from its formation and growing in trees to its end usages when it is put into human usage. Wood is an age-old traditional fascinating material with a sensory-rich immersive experience that kindles aesthetics and creativity. The utility, durability, and functionality of wood render it a cosmopolitan material. It constitutes an integral part of human lives from ancient times to modern societies being used by various sectors viz., construction, furniture, panel products, paper and pulp, sports goods, agricultural implements, etc., Wood, being a biological material, is susceptible to degradation both by physical and biological means, and the need to protect the wood and prevent heavy economic losses constitutes a major challenge. Also, wood formed by the trees is the major sinks of carbon and the carbon remains locked-up for the life of the wood, thereby serving as important tool to mitigate the climate change. But the carbon stored in wood returns to the atmosphere when it degrades and will have positive effect on climate change. Hence, wood protection aiming for extending the service life of wood plays a key role in locking the carbon for a longer period in the wood and also substantially reduce the demand and depletion of forest resources. The book focuses on wood as an important natural bio-resource, inventory of wood protection, usage, utilization, preservatives, protection technologies and wood protection from all forms of degradation. Special focus is given on the eco-friendly way of protecting wood and its importance in mitigating climate change. The book is useful for Indian and international readers, who are working in wood domains. It is of interest to wood technologists, teachers, researchers, climate change scientists, capacity builders, and policymakers. It is of immense importance as a guide and study material to the graduate and postgraduate students of wood science in various universities of India and abroad.
