Since the publication of "The coconut palm - A monograph" in 1960, considerable information has been accrued on the crop through work at research institutes, international organisations and development agencies. Although coconut cultivation is spread over 93 countries, providing employment and creating livelihood opportunities to 64 million families around the globe, smallholder coconut farmers are now facing numerous challenges. The wide gap between the potential and actual yield is a major concern, and as such it is necessary to disseminate knowledge in order to implement research findings. Coconut research in India, one of the leading coconut producing countries, is celebrating its centenary, making this an opportune time to review the research and development advances and the relevant technologies. This detailed, comprehensive book covers all aspects of coconut, from the origins to cultivation, breeding, physiology and value addition, as well as subjects of topicalinterest like nutrition and health, biotechnology, and climate change and carbon sequestration. Written by leading experts in the fields it emphasises that the livelihood of the small coconut landholders is the ultimate aim of scientists and developmental agencies, and outlines various important strategies to make coconut farming more remunerative globally. It discusses work in all the major coconut growing countries and outlines suggestions for international cooperation. Research work on the crop is comparatively difficult because of its perennial nature, longevity, height, long juvenile phase, large sized nuts, cross pollination and seed propagation. As these special features necessitate greater investment of resources, time and land, it is all the more imperative that research is not duplicated and the information and experience becoming available around the world is shared so that it can be fully utilised. In this context periodic publications, compiling all the available information on coconut assume greater significance. This book is therefore of great value to researchers, students, extension workers, developmental agencies and progressive farmers.

Preservation And Authentication Of Coconut Products written by R. Pandiselvam and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-09-16 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Coconut is an important economic crop widely cultivated in island and coastal ecosystems in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. Emerging trends in biochemical characterization have highlighted the nutraceutical and nutritional importance of coconut and its products. However, the short shelf life of these products seriously restricts their market potential. Coconut beverages such as coconut water, inflorescence sap and coconut milk have numerous health promoting nutrients, although the highly perishable nature of coconut beverages and products causes significant post-harvest losses. Conventional thermal technologies implemented by the coconut processing industry affect the heat sensitive nutrients and create a negative impact on the color and flavor profiles of the products. Producers have been looking for an efficient alternative to thermal technologies, although most of the emerging non-thermal technologies such as cold plasma, ozone, pulsed light, UV-light, pulsed electric field and high-pressure processing are in lab scale. It is important to understand the practical application of these technologies at industry scale. Also, it is important to analyze the influence and application of these emerging technologies on the quality profile, safety and shelf-life extension of the products. The adulteration rate in coconut products has been increasing along with their prices, making it vital to understand the application of non-destructive tools for authentication. Preservation and Authentication of Coconut Products: Recent Trends and Prospects offers comprehensive coverage on the application of emerging technologies in coconut and coconut-based products. Present industrial technologies for coconut products and their impact on quality are covered in full, including technologies for each specific product and their challenges and prospects. Non-destructive tools and applications for the quantification of bioactive components and authentication are also explored. This book serves as a one-stop reference for researchers, food technologists, food industry specialists and nutritionists looking to understand the implications of emerging food processing technologies on the quality of coconut products.

Plant improvement has shifted its focus from yield, quality and disease resistance to factors that will enhance commercial export, such as early maturity, shelf life and better processing quality. Conventional plant breeding methods aiming at the improvement of a self-pollinating crop usually take 10-12 years to develop and release of the new variety. During the past 10 years, significant advances have been made and accelerated methods have been developed for precision breeding and early release of crop varieties. This book focuses on the accelerated breeding technologies that have been adopted for major oil crops. It summarizes concepts dealing with germplasm enhancement and development of improved varieties based on innovative methodologies that include doubled haploidy, marker assisted selection, marker assisted background selection, genetic mapping, genomic selection, high-throughput genotyping, high-throughput phenotyping, mutation breeding, reverse breeding, transgenic breeding, shuttle breeding, speed breeding, low cost high-throughput field phenotyping, etc. This edited volume is therefore an excellent reference on accelerated development of improved crop varieties.

This book offers a practical and innovative guide to managing the complex relationship between coconut plantations and insect pests. It focuses on effective solutions for pest identification, monitoring, and management through a blend of cutting-edge technologies and traditional approaches. The coconut palm, aptly called the "tree of life," sustains millions of people across tropical regions, providing food, income, and livelihoods. Cultivated on approximately 12 million hectares globally, coconut production faces unprecedented challenges. Meeting the growing demand for diverse coconut products—from coconut water and oil to emerging uses like sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)—requires balancing food security with renewable energy needs. Adding to these challenges are pest infestations, including insects, mites, and vertebrates, which can cause crop losses of up to 30%. These threats not only lower yields but also jeopardise income and food security for coconut-dependent communities. Across the chapters, prominent coconut sector researchers and academics delve into pest biology, ecology, plant-pest interactions, climate change effects, organic farming, molecular tools, regulatory frameworks, and best practices for pest management. It contains detailed strategies for breeding coconut palms with enhanced pest resistance and addresses critical topics such as biosecurity and the global exchange of coconut germplasm. With its unique emphasis on practices and real-world applications, this volume is an essential resource for researchers, agricultural professionals, practitioners, and policymakers committed to building a resilient coconut sector.

Cash Crops written by P.M. Priyadarshan and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-18 with Science categories.

Cash crops are grown and sold for monetary gain and not necessarily for sustenance. They include coffee, tea, coconut, cotton, jute, groundnut, castor, linseed, cocoa, rubber, cassava, soybean, sweet potato, potato, wheat, corn and teff. While some of these crops have been improved for realizing yield potential, breeding of many of them is still in infancy. Crops that underwent rigorous breeding have eventually lost much of the diversity due to extensive cultivation with a few improved varieties and the diversity in less bred species is to be conserved. Over the past years, scholars and policy makers have become increasingly aware of the short and long-run impact of climatic factors on economic, food security, social and political outcomes . Genetic diversity, natural and induced, is much needed for the future generations to sustain food production with more climate resilient crops. In contrast, crop uniformity produced across the farm fields in the form of improved varieties is genetically vulnerable to biotic and abiotic stresses. Thus, it is essential and challenging to address the issue of compromising between maximizing crop yield under a given set of conditions and minimizing the risk of crop failure when conditions change. Cash crops are grown in an array of climatic conditions. Many of the world’s poor still live in rural areas. Many are subsistence farmers, operating very small farms using very little agricultural inputs for achieving marketable outputs. Conserving the diversity of these crops and addressing all issues of crop culture through modern tools of biotechnology and genomics is a real challenge. We believe the focus of this book is to fill an unmet need of this and other grower communities by providing the necessary knowledge, albeit indirectly via the academics, to manage the risks of cash crops breeding through managing genetic diversity.
