Disparities exist in the way current linguistic research approaches prepositions, both in terms of definition and classification. Despite an abundance of publications containing analyses of prepositions, especially those in the English language, relatively little attention has been devoted to the preposition ‘for’, despite its high frequency of occurrence in English. Carried out from a cognitive perspective, and with the aid of Langacker’s cognitive grammar methodology, this text provides evidence in support of the thesis that ‘for’ constitutes a category by itself, characterised by a complex semantic structure that comprises a variety of schemas sanctioning the uses of ‘for’ in the English language. As such, this book will primarily interest students and teachers that have an interest in cognitive linguistics.

A Cognitive Perspective on Spatial Prepositions: Intertwining networks is devoted to the issue of the relation between language and thought approached from the perspective of spatial relations encoded by four equivalent spatial prepositions – English to, German zu, Polish do and Russian к. Regarding these prepositions as path-prepositions, the authors show that the prepositional semantic structures are conceptually grounded in the PATH and the MOTION-EVENT frames and explain that prepositional senses emerge as a result of the PATH image schema transformations and metaphorical mappings related to the EVENT STRUCTURE metaphor. Based on their findings, the authors show how senso-motoric functioning, life experience, individual knowledge, imagery and different ways in which people conceptualize the world influence the relation between language and conceptualization.

The volume addresses the issue of the faculty of language as a biocognitive phenomenon dealing with diverse aspects related to the category of prepositions on the basis of examples from selected languages. The choice of this category was determined by the highly polysemous and fuzzy nature of prepositions. Based on the empirical evidence concerning selected prepositions of some Slavic, German and Romance languages, individual chapters discuss (i) the status of the case assigned by a preposition, (ii) learning and processing of prepositions, (iii) prototypes and metaphorical extensions, (iv) axiology and valuation as well as (v) category overlap. The volume brings together the generative and cognitive perspectives, both usually treated as opposing, by demonstrating the central role of conceptualisation seen as a multisensory phenomenon including emotions in the faculty of language highlighting the notion of embodiment.
