Cognitive Processing In Second Language Acquisition written by Martin Pütz and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-03-19 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This edited volume represents state of the field research linking cognition and second language acquisition, reflecting the experience of the learner when engaged in noticing, input/output processing, retrieval, and even attrition of target forms. Contributions are both theoretical and practical, describing a variety of L1, L2 and L3 combinations from around the world as observed in spoken, written, and computer-mediated contexts. The book relates conditions of language, task, medium or environment to how learners make decisions about language, with discussions about the application or efficacy of these conditions on linguistic success and development, and pedagogical implications.

Critical reviews and in-depth research syntheses of these pivotal cognitive learner factors are put into historical and broader contexts, drawing upon the multiple authors' extensive research experience, penetrating insights and unique perspectives spanning applied linguistics, teacher training, educational psychology, and cognitive science. The carefully crafted chapters provide essential course readings and valuable references for seasoned researchers and aspiring postgraduate students in the broad fields of instructed second language acquisition, foreign language training, teacher education, language pedagogy, educational psychology, and cognitive development.

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 2, University of Münster, language: English, abstract: Reading is an important skill which does not only provide the ability to gain new information but also acquires new language skills. Grabe identifies effective approaches for reading and determines that good readers need “rapid and automatic word recognition skills”, “a large recognition of vocabulary”, “sound knowledge of syntactic structure and discourse organization”, and “metacognitive awareness of reading purposes and text comprehension” . Successful readers are those who use learning strategies effectively. Academic reading requires the development of strategic reading. Readers have to be aware of their goals in reading and be able to administer strategies effectively. These strategies are to be chosen carefully, depending on their purpose in reading. Only then will the reader be able to check his/ her understanding of the text and solve comprehension problems successfully. Out of the various aspects of teaching reading to second language (L2) learners in a classroom setting, the present essay will focus on metacognitive reading strategies. First, the question will be answered what is meant by the term ‘metacognitive reading strategies’. A definition will be presented. Then, the essay provides a theoretic framework of metacognitive reading strategies before reading, while reading and after reading. Finally, there will be two examples of how metacognitive reading strategies can be taught in a classroom setting.

Task Sequencing and Instructed Second Language Learning provides theoretical rationales for, and empirical studies of, the effects of sequencing language learning tasks to maximize second language learning. Examples of task sequences, and both laboratory and classroom-based research into them, are presented. This is the first collection of so far under-researched studies on the effects of task sequencing, framed within the Cognition Hypothesis of Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) and the SSARC model for task sequencing. Perspectives include -- laboratory-based and classroom-based research designs -- implications for teacher training -- laboratory and classroom research methods -- conversational interaction -- task sequencing and Task Based Language Teaching syllabus design

Language fundamentally defines and distinguishes us as humans, as members of society, and as individuals. As we go through life, our relationship with language and with learning shifts and changes, but it remains significant. This book is an up-to-date resource for graduate students and researchers in second language (L2) acquisition who are interested in language learning across the lifespan. The main goal is to survey and evaluate what is known about the linguistic-cognition-affect associations that occur in L2 learning from birth through senescence (passing through the stages of childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and third age), the extent to which L2 acquisition may be seen as contributing to healthy and active aging, the impact of the development of personalized, technology-enhanced communicative L2 environments, and how these phenomena are to be approached scientifically and methodologically. The effects of certain specific variables, such as gender, socio-economic background, and bilingualism are also analyzed, as we argue that chronological age does not determine the positioning of L2 learners across the lifespan: age is part of a complex web of social distinctions such as psychological and individual factors that intersect in the construction of a learner’s relative status and opportunities.
