Robotics and control are both research and application domains that have been frequently engineered through the use of interdisciplinary approaches like cybernetics. Cognition is a particular concept of this approach, abstracted from the context of living organisms to that of artificial devices, and is concerned with knowledge acquisition and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses. Cognitive robotics and control refer to knowledge processing as much as knowledge generation from problem understanding, leading to special forms of architectures that enable systems to behave in an autonomous way. The main aim of this book is to highlight emerging applications and address recent breakthroughs in the domain of cognitive robotics and control and related areas. Procedures, algorithms, architectures, and implementations for reasoning, problem solving, or decision making are considered in the domain of robotics and control.

The aim of the book is to introduce the state-of-the-art technologies in the field of brain and cognitive intelligence used in robotics control, particularly on studying how the brain learns and controls complex motor skills and how to replicate these in robots. This will be the first book that systematically and thoroughly deals with the above topics. Advances made in the past decades are described. Interesting topics such as human-robot interactions, neurorobotics, biomechanics in robotic control, robot vision, force control, and control and coordination of humanoid robots are covered.

Behavioral And Cognitive Robotics An Adaptive Perspective written by Stefano Nolfi and has been published by Stefano Nolfi this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-01-15 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book describes how to create robots capable to develop the behavioral and cognitive skills required to perform a task through machine learning methods. It focuses on model-free approaches with minimal human intervention in which the behavior used by the robots to solve their task and the way in which such behavior is produced is discovered by the adaptive process automatically, i.e. it is not specified by the experimenter. The book, which is targeted toward researchers, PhD and Master students with an interest in machine learning and robotics: (i) introduces autonomous robots, evolutionary algorithms, reinforcement learning algorithms, and learning by demonstration methods, (ii) uses concrete experiments to illustrate the fundamental aspects of embodied intelligence, (iii) provides theoretical and practical knowledge, including tutorials and exercises, and (iv) provides an integrated review of recent research in this area carried within partially separated research communities.

Cognitive Reasoning For Compliant Robot Manipulation written by Daniel Sebastian Leidner and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-08 with Technology & Engineering categories.

In order to achieve human-like performance, this book covers the four steps of reasoning a robot must provide in the concept of intelligent physical compliance: to represent, plan, execute, and interpret compliant manipulation tasks. A classification of manipulation tasks is conducted to identify the central research questions of the addressed topic. It is investigated how symbolic task descriptions can be translated into meaningful robot commands.Among others, the developed concept is applied in an actual space robotics mission, in which an astronaut aboard the International Space Station (ISS) commands the humanoid robot Rollin' Justin to maintain a Martian solar panel farm in a mock-up environment

The current state of the art in cognitive robotics, covering the challenges of building AI-powered intelligent robots inspired by natural cognitive systems. A novel approach to building AI-powered intelligent robots takes inspiration from the way natural cognitive systems—in humans, animals, and biological systems—develop intelligence by exploiting the full power of interactions between body and brain, the physical and social environment in which they live, and phylogenetic, developmental, and learning dynamics. This volume reports on the current state of the art in cognitive robotics, offering the first comprehensive coverage of building robots inspired by natural cognitive systems. Contributors first provide a systematic definition of cognitive robotics and a history of developments in the field. They describe in detail five main approaches: developmental, neuro, evolutionary, swarm, and soft robotics. They go on to consider methodologies and concepts, treating topics that include commonly used cognitive robotics platforms and robot simulators, biomimetic skin as an example of a hardware-based approach, machine-learning methods, and cognitive architecture. Finally, they cover the behavioral and cognitive capabilities of a variety of models, experiments, and applications, looking at issues that range from intrinsic motivation and perception to robot consciousness. Cognitive Robotics is aimed at an interdisciplinary audience, balancing technical details and examples for the computational reader with theoretical and experimental findings for the empirical scientist.

In recent years, autonomous robots, including Xavier, Martha [1], Rhino [2,3], Minerva, and Remote Agent, have shown impressive performance in long-term demonstrations. In NASA’s Deep Space program, for example, an - tonomous spacecraft controller, called the Remote Agent [5], has autonomously performed a scienti?c experiment in space. At Carnegie Mellon University, Xavier [6], another autonomous mobile robot, navigated through an o?ce - vironment for more than a year, allowing people to issue navigation commands and monitor their execution via the Internet. In 1998, Minerva [7] acted for 13 days as a museum tourguide in the Smithsonian Museum, and led several thousand people through an exhibition. These autonomous robots have in common that they rely on plan-based c- trol in order to achieve better problem-solving competence. In the plan-based approach, robots generate control actions by maintaining and executing a plan that is e?ective and has a high expected utility with respect to the robots’ c- rent goals and beliefs. Plans are robot control programs that a robot can not only execute but also reason about and manipulate [4]. Thus, a plan-based c- troller is able to manage and adapt the robot’s intended course of action — the plan — while executing it and can thereby better achieve complex and changing tasks.
