Excerpt from Coleccion de Poesias Castellanas Anteriores al Siglo XV Tambien hemos creído deber suprimir en esta edicion la vida del mar ques de Santillana y el catálogo de sus obras que en el primer plan de San chez no eran seguramente ociosos, tratándose únicamente de ilustrar una produccion aislada de dicho ilustre marques pero que en esta coleccion no vienen a cuento. A medida que Sanchez iba adelantando en sus investi gaciones y haciendo nuevos descubrimientos iba ensanchando en su mente las proporciones y el plan de su obra y asi lo anuncia en los pró logos y advertencias de los cuatro tomos de que consta al paso que, con candor de hombre verdaderamente sabio, corrige constantemente apenas los descubre, los errores que antes han podido escapérsele. Así por ejem plo, en el primer tomo, en las notas a la carta del marques, que lo ocupan casi todo habla del Poema de Alejandro como de un libro que no cono cia y que acaso se habria perdido; luego lo descubrió y lo publicó en el tomo tercero de su coleccion. ¿qué interes puede pues tener ya esta nota, que es la del n° 154 página 96? El libro de Alejandro de que hace memoria el marques sena acaso alguna traduccion del latín de Guai tero, etc., etc. ¿qué interes pueden ofrecer los trozos que de él cita? Lo mismo pudiéramos decir de otros muchos pasages. No hemos tenido pues solamente que invertir el órden de las materias, mas tambien que suprimir muchas cosas que el mismo Sanchez hubiera suprimido en el caso de haber llegado a publicar una segunda edicion de su preciosa obra. Baste lo dicho para disculparnos de haber osado poner mano en cosa que salió de su pluma y para que no se atribuyan á vano prurito de innova ciones las mudanzas que hemos hecho en su primer tomo. Otra mejora, permitasenos decirlo asi, y mucho mas sustancial, hallará el lector en esta nueva edicion de la obra de Sanchez tal es el suplemento que le hemos añadido, y que contiene tres curiosas producciones inéditas, anteriores al siglo xv, recientemente sacadas luz en Madrid por el apreciable literato don Pedro Pidal. Como en la introduccion escrita por este senor, que hemos conservado al frente de dicho suplemento, se halla una puntual no ticia de las tres obras ahora nuevamente reimpresas, creemos escusado ia sistir aquí sobre la importancia de esta publicacion.
