The goal of the International Symposia on Software Composition is to advance the state of the research in component-based software development. We focus on the challenges related to component development, reuse, veri?cation and, of course,composition.Softwarecompositionisbecomingmoreandmoreimportant as innovation in software engineering shifts from the development of individual components to their reuse and recombination in novel ways. To this end, for the 2008 edition, researchers were solicited to contribute on topics related to component adaptation techniques, composition languages, calculi and type systems, as well as emerging composition techniques such as aspect-oriented programming, service-oriented architectures, and mashups. In line with previous editions of SC, contributions were sought focusing on both theory and practice, with a particular interest in e?orts relating them. This LNCS volume contains the proceedings of the 7th International S- posium on Software Composition, which was held on March 29–30, 2008, as a satellite event of the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software (ETAPS), in Budapest, Hungary. We received 90 initial submissions from all over the world, out of which 70 were considered for evaluation by a Program Committee consisting of 30 - ternational experts. Among these submissions, we selected 13 long papers and 6 short papers to be included in the proceedings and presented at the conf- ence. Each paper went through a thoroughrevisionprocess and was reviewedby three to ?ve reviewers. This ensured the necessary quality for publishing these proceedings in time for the event, a ?rst in the history of the symposium.

This work introduces a new specification and verification approach for dynamic systems. The introduced approach is able to provide type II error free results by definition, i.e. there are no hidden faults in the verification result. The approach is based on Kaucher interval arithmetic to enclose the measurement in a bounded error sense. The developed methods are proven mathematically to provide a reliable verification for a wide class of safety critical systems.

This textbook concentrates on processes, activities and results related to software architectures. It describes the separation of architecture artefacts corresponding to their nature, their logical or their modeling level on one hand and at the same time emphasizes their integration based on their mutual relations. Design or development processes demand for integration, as different artifacts must be elaborated, which are mutually dependent and need to be in a consistent form. The book is structured in four parts. The introductory Part I deals with the relevance of architectures, the central role of the design subprocess both in development or maintenance, and the importance of the decisions and artefacts in the overall result. Another topic is the spectrum of views an architecture language has to offer, and that there are different architectures to be regarded, from abstract and static to detailed, technical, and specific. Part II then discusses “important topics” onthe architecture level. It deals with adaptability especially for embedded systems, with integrating styles/ pattern notations, with different reuse forms and how to find them, with the role of architectures for integrating different existing systems, and with reverse and reengineering of legacy systems. Next, Part III covers architecture modeling and its relation to surrounding activities, as well as architectures to surrounding other results. The single chapters are on transformation between requirements and architectures, architectures and programming, architectures and project management and organization, as well as architectures and their relations to quality assurance or documentation. Eventually, Part IV summarizes the main messages and presents open problems, both for every single chapter and across chapters. Every chapter focuses on a specific problem it addresses, a question it answers, the attention it demands, a message it conveys, and further open questions it raises. The chapters are mostly independent, which implies a certain redundancy, yet it allows lecturers (and their students) to either use the book as the basis of teaching software architecture or design, or to just pick those aspects that need special attention in a more advanced course.

Motivation for this Book Ontologies have received increasing attention over the last two decades. Their roots can be traced back to the ancient philosophers, who were interested in a c- ceptualization of the world. In the more recent past, ontologies and ontological engineering have evolved in computer science, building on various roots such as logics, knowledge representation, information modeling and management, and (knowledge-based) information systems. Most recently, largely driven by the next generation internet, the so-called Semantic Web, ontological software engineering has developed into a scientific field of its own, which puts particular emphasis on the theoretical foundations of representation and reasoning, and on the methods and tools required for building ontology-based software applications in diverse domains. Though this field is largely dominated by computer science, close re- tionships have been established with its diverse areas of application, where - searchers are interested in exploiting the results of ontological software engine- ing, particularly to build large knowledge-intensive applications at high productivity and low maintenance effort.
